We’ve heard the term “antioxidant” when related to health and anti-aging. Antioxidants are touted as something that we need and should get more of. So what is an antioxidant? Antioxidants are compounds that keep you healthy by delaying or even stopping damage to your cells. The best way to get antioxidants and vitamins to your cells is by eating them.

FOOD

Eating foods that are rich in antioxidants is as simple as knowing which foods to actually consume. Eating clean has always been a gateway to staying healthy and now more than ever, it’s crucial to choose food that’s helpful in fighting disease.

Citrus fruits are known as a powerhouse of vitamin C, which is a vital component for fighting disease and aging. While you can’t prevent actually growing older, you can do your part to prevent the side effects of aging.

You should aim to consume fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and cranberries daily, as they are excellent sources of antioxidants. Vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes and dark leafy greens like spinach and kale are excellent sources of beta carotene which also helps against aging.

Strong bones and a healthy heart benefit from vitamin K, which is also found in kale, spinach, and turnip greens. Protein is also needed to help these vitamins and antioxidant-rich foods to do their job efficiently and actually be absorbed.

Opt for healthy meats as your protein. Avoid or limit your intake of red meats, choosing organic and grass-fed if available. Try to eat lean meats like poultry. Fish is a good source of Omega-3, especially salmon.

Eating whole grains will help you feel full, as they are a good source of fiber. Whole grain oatmeal is a heart-healthy food. However, if you are gluten-intolerant, avoid whole grains.

You’ll also want to consume anti-inflammatory foods to help keep you healthy as they fight against inflammation, which is linked to aging. Besides fruits and vegetables, these foods are olive oils, soy-based foods, green tea, and dark chocolate.

Staying healthy and reducing the signs and symptoms of aging is important. You need foods that are high in vitamins and minerals and foods that will fight the aging process. But sometimes, healthy eating alone isn’t enough.

SUPPLEMENTS

Consider adding antioxidants and vitamin supplements to your health protocol. Supplements can step in and pick up the slack when your diet isn’t giving you the full benefit. Anti-aging supplements can help restore your energy and giving you more strength to do what you enjoy doing. Some supplements may also improve your mental capabilities.  Did you know that a vitamin deficiency is linked to forgetfulness? Not having enough vitamin B-12 can affect how you think. Supplements in the B-family of vitamins may help with that forgetfulness.

Supplements can also help give strength to your bones and may ease joint pain. These types of supplements fight inflammation in the body. Many of them are loaded with multiple vitamins and contain Omega 3, which is good for your heart. Supplements such as coenzyme Q10 may also help with heart health and stimulate cell energy.

Consider your diet and look at the foods you’re currently eating. If you’re concerned about your health and want to eat a more anti-aging and antioxidant-rich diet, swap out unhealthy foods for the better ones mentioned here. If supplements would work with your lifestyle, consider adding them in as well. With some simple changes in your food and diet intake, you can help your body age more gracefully while maintaining youthful vigor.
