Homemade Pita Bread Recipe

If you’re like me, you love a good pita sandwich. If you’re also like me, you don’t like paying pita bread prices. That’s why I’m proud to bring you this homemade pita bread recipe. It’s fairly easy to make, it’s tasty, and pita is great for sandwiches as well as crisping up for snacks!

Homemade Pita Bread – The Winner in Versatility

The reason I love a good homemade pita bread recipe is because it’s cost effective, delicious, and you can use it for so many things! Whether it’s a breakfast wrap of eggs, sausage, and salsa or a nice salad wrap with some chicken, pita bread is a winner. I also love to crisp it up in a little olive oil for a nice snack with olives. Yum!

For me, the biggest selling point of this homemade pita bread recipe is its ease. Of course you have to kneed it, but that’s the most labor intensive part of this recipe. It’s also the most fun. There’s nothing like getting a little bit of flour on your hands!

Pita Bread Recipe

Yield: 8 -10

Ingredients

  • 3 Cups Bread Flour or All Purpose Flour
  • 2 Teaspoons Sugar
  • 2 Teaspoons Instant Yeast
  • 1 1/2 Teaspoons Kosher Salt
  • 1 Cup Warm Water
  • 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil, + extra for greasing

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour, yeast, sugar and salt. Once combined, add the water and vegetable oil.
  2. Knead the dough in a mixer with the dough attachment for 5 minutes (or 10 by hand).
  3. Once combined, transfer the dough to a large greased bowl and cover with a kitchen towel. Let it sit for 60 minutes. The dough should be puffy.
  4. Grease a clean countertop or cutting board.
  5. Separate the dough into 8-10 pieces, depending on your size preference.
  6. Roll out the dough into approximately 5” circles. You can leave them with their natural shape, or cut them into perfect circles with a cookie cutter.
  7. Place the circle on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let them sit, uncovered for 15 minutes.
  8. Move the rack to the lowest setting of your oven and pre-heat to 500.
  9. Bake the pita bread for 5-7 minutes, until it puffs up. If your pita doesn’t puff,
  10. your oven isn’t hot enough and you’ll need to increase it moving forward.
  11. To brown your pitas, move the rack to the middle of the store and back for 2-3 minutes.
  12. Remove the browned pitas from your oven and cover them with a dishtowel to keep the warm and soft.
  13. Use immediately or store them in an airtight container for later.

As you can see, this is an easy recipe. Although there are several steps to it, it’s mostly a matter of adjusting racks and making other small adjustments. And it’s totally worth it!

You can use it for tacos, ladle some beef stew over the top of it, crisp it up as a snack, or pretty much anything else you can think of.
