Room on the Broom Book Activities (+Giveaway)

Room on the Broom Book Activities | Optimistic Mommy

Happy October!  It’s hard to believe that we’re well into fall and that October is here already!  This month for our book give away and fun ideas we are sharing the book Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.  It is perfect for fall and for little ones and big kids too!

We decided to spend a day reading this really fun children’s book and then doing some activities that made us think of the story.  Have you read the book?  Here’s a little bit about the book in case you haven’t:

The witch and her cat are happily flying through the sky on a broomstick when the wind picks up and blows away the witch’s hat, then her bow, and then her wand!  Luckily, three helpful animals find the missing items, and all they want in return is a ride on the broom.  But is there room on the broom for so many friends?  And when disaster strikes, will they be able to save the witch from a hungry dragon?

Most kids love to play in fall leaves.  My little one is no exception!  So after reading the book, we set out to play in the fall leaves and make this adorable “witches broom” leaf bag that will be so cute displayed on my front porch for fall!

Witch’s Broom Leaf Bag

Supplies:

  • Paper Bags (You can use any size and actually several sizes would be really cute!)
  • Plastic Shopping Bags
  • Leaves
  • Sticks For Handles (Size should vary with bag size.)
  • Scissors
  • String, Twine, or Ribbon

Instructions:

Flatten the bottom of your bag without unfolding the bag.  Fold the bag in half.

Carefully cut strips in the bag every 2-3 inches, leaving several inches at the top and bottom of the bag so the strips stay intact.

Gather fall leaves into plastic shopping bags (and of course play in the leaves too).

Place the bag of leaves inside the paper bag that you have cut strips into.  If you take the leaves out of the plastic bag, they will fall through the strips in the paper bag.  That is okay for a few but would be very messy if all were loose.   Let just a few leaves fall through the sides.

Insert a stick into the center of the leaf bag and gather the bag around the stick.  Tie with a ribbon or piece of twine.  I used this adorable burlap ribbon with white chevron stripes to tie mine.

That’s it!  Set your cute witches broom on your door step or inside your home for décor!

Room on the Broom Snack

When we came inside from playing in the leaves and finished our fun “witches broom leaf bag”, we decided it was time for a snack and put together these little brooms and wands!  They were easy and children can help make them.

Ingredients:

  • Pretzel Sticks
  • White Cheese Slices (Or String Cheese)
  • Yellow Cheese Slices
  • Star Cookie Cutter
  • Knife

Instructions:

Slice the white cheese into strips.

Lay several strips of white cheese on your work surface and lay the end of a pretzel stick on top.  Add a few more strips of cheese and use another strip of cheese to wrap around and hold the “broom” onto its handle.

For the wands, cut several star shapes from cheese slices using a star cookie cutter.  When placed on your serving plate, place a pretzel stick at the base of each star for the handle of the wand.

Arrange the wands and brooms on a plate and serve with a bowl of extra pretzels, additional cheese, and fresh fruit for a healthy Room on the Broom snack!

Room on the Broom Pencil Topper Craft

After our little snack, we decided to do one more craft and project.  We made broom tops for our pencils!

Supplies:

  • Pencils
  • Brown Paper Bags
  • Scissors
  • Small Rubber Bands

Instructions:

Cut a strip of paper bag approximately 2”-3” wide and 6” long.

Cut the strip of paper into thin strips leaving one side of the paper intact so the strips stay together.

Wrap the strip of paper around the end of your pencil, several times to create a full “broom”.

Secure the paper bag broom to the end of your pencil with a couple of small rubber bands.

The next thing we did wasn’t really part of our craft but we decided to write down our favorite parts of the day.  We used our newly topped pencil to write about our adventure outside, about our favorite things from the book, and what we had learned from the story!  This may have been the best part of the day!
