Scary or Fun How to Choose a Great Halloween Costume

You can go two ways when you’re choosing an outfit for Halloween; fun or fright. Of course, it’s possible to combine the two. There are witch, werewolf and other costumes that get the balance just right. On the other hand, going to a party dressed as Leatherface, complete with chainsaw probably isn’t going to raise much laughter.

There isn’t really a right or wrong when it comes to Halloween costumes; it depends on the circumstances. You need to think about where you will be wearing the outfit, how practical it’s going to be and what your budget is.

The suitability of the outfit

Always remember that just because you love the outfit doesn’t mean that everyone will. You should think about where you are going in the outfit. Attending an all-adult Halloween party as a flesh eating zombie with skin hanging off may be fine, but if you’re going to an event where young children are going to be present you may want to ease off on the gore just a bit.

Their parents may not be too happy if the kids have nightmares for weeks after. Yes, Halloween can involve a lot of scary stuff but you may need to think about sticking to fun scary depending on who is about. That’s something to bear in mind when answering the door to trick or treaters too; you may want to leave the severed head on the kitchen table.

Cost and convenience

If you’re thinking of dressing as a particular person, creature or object for Halloween then you need to give some consideration to the practicalities of the outfit. It may be really cool dressing as a spider but how easy is it going to be to handle all those legs if you’re travelling to a party on public transport.

That sexy witch costume may seem tempting but if you’re going to be accompanying any trick or treaters through the night you may want to think about keeping away from high heels, or having some pumps to change into.

Lots of people think about making their own Halloween costume to save money. The problem is that by the time you have got the materials together it’s often not that cheap. Halloween costumes are not that expensive to buy and they do save you a lot of time and effort. You also don’t have to suffer the embarrassment of explaining that you’re Luke Skywalker, not some Judo guy walking round with a giant glow stick.

The most important thing to remember about Halloween is that the idea is to have fun. You don’t want to disturb people with your outfit, so think of others not just yourself. It’s worth investing in buying an outfit if you want to just simply get changed on the day and go to the party as a monster, ghoul, or movie character that everyone can recognise.

  1. I know that halloween costumes are traditionally to be scary to scare away and confuse demons and such. I like both scary and cute. My favourite go to is a practicing witch (apothecary jars with strange looking items in them (dried cantaloupe skins and the jar label says troll ears) and a caldron (where I keep the candy)) and some “lady fingers”. I used to also dress up as a box of popcorn
