When kids are home from school for their summer break, you might be anxious for them to spend more of their free time outside so that they can get some fresh air, some exercise, and get out of your hair for a while. But if you have a lot of bugs or other pests in your area during the summer months, you might be worried about their health and safety while they spend time outside.
Luckily, for most pests, there are things you can do to keep them away from your home and family while protecting your kids from harm. To help you see how this can be done, here are three ways to keep pests from bugging your kids as they play outside in the summer.
Invest In Outdoor Fans
If the pests that you’re worried about in your area are the flying variety, like wasps or mosquitoes, one great option to look into is investing in some outdoor fans.
According to TheEveryMom.com, most small flying insects aren’t exactly that strong when they’re flying. Usually, strong winds can knock them easily off course and keep them from coming around a certain area. Knowing this, putting up some fans in your backyard or wherever your kids will be playing can be a great, natural way to keep mosquitoes, wasps, or other flying bugs from getting too close.
Use Natural Repellents
Many parents are very concerned about what they use on the skin of their kids. So if you’re wanting to keep pests off your little ones but aren’t wanting to use any chemical to do this, you should look into some options for natural repellents.
Many times, natural repellents don’t even mean putting something onto your kids to keep the pests away. Usually, the best way to naturally repel pests is to take away the environments that they like to be in. For example, you can get rid of any standing water in your yard or introduce a predator into the area, like a bat or bird. If bugs and pests can’t live out an easy existence in your yard, they’ll likely move on.
Be Smart When Spending Time Outside
Since bugs and pests are supposed to live outside, you can expect for you and your kids to run into them from time to time when spending time outside, too. However, if you’re smart about when you’re outside, you may be able to avoid the worst of it.
According to Andrea Cooley, a contributor to Parents.com, bugs are usually most abundant early in the morning and right around dusk. So if you can avoid being outside during those times, you’ll be able to avoid the largest amount of bugs, too. And when you are outside, try to keep your kids’ skin covered so bugs won’t have easy access to bite or crawl on them.
If you’re worried about your kids being outside with all the bugs around your home, consider using the tips mentioned above to keep the bugs away so they can enjoy their time outdoors.
