Teeth have got to be one of the most important parts of the body, and dental issues seem to be one of the most effortlessly preventable problems. Because dental problems are so common, over the years there have been so many myths and misconceptions that have arisen that are just simply not true at all.

Here are four of the most common dental myths:

Seeing a Dentist Is Only Needed When There Is a Problem

One of the fastest ways dentists avoid problems before they even happen is by spotting the warning signs during checkups. There seem to be a lot of people who believe that going to a dentist is only required when you have a problem, such as a chipped tooth, cavity, bleeding gums, etc.

This is just simply not true, and as a rule of thumb, trips to the dentist should occur around every one or two years. Children should have their teeth checked more regularly than adults, as you need to keep an eye on how they grow.

White Teeth = Healthy

A fun thing to tell people which often brings up a lot of surprises is that white teeth do not necessarily mean healthy teeth – even though so many of us strive for that beaming white smile.

New teeth almost always start out being white in colour and then see some discolouration due to staining and general wear and tear. If you are seeing some fade in the colour that you don’t like, it is best to see a dentist. Choosing to whiten your teeth may just cover up an underlying problem that needs to be checked out.
