5 Ways My Family Worked On Our Home During Lockdown

Sharing is caring!

Many of us will agree 2020 was both a year to forget and an unforgettable year at the same time.

In between the pandemic, lockdown, isolation, quarantine and many other crises, we had to be strong for each other and spend a lot of time together.

As a family, we not only worked on coping emotionally but also did some work on our home as well.

The lockdown meant many shops, entertainment facilities, and pubs were closed, so we tried our hands on a few home renovations.

It was a struggle keeping it together, but we managed to get a few things over the line. As the lockdown continues partially in some places, here are some of the home improvements we made:

Worked on the Doors

The lockdown was a chance to do some work on the doors. While we had to upgrade the security on some doors, others, like the kids’ room, needed a few repairs.

I am a handyman, but this required the touch of a professional locksmith. A family friend recommended a residential locksmith company, I rang them up, and they got the job done easily and quickly.

Besides repairing some doors, the locksmith also helped improve house security, and a few key duplications were necessary.

Made the Outdoors a Liveable Space

Being stuck in the house during the lockdown meant there were days when the indoors seemed stuffy.

This inspired us to make our home’s outdoors a more liveable space. What did we do? We constructed a garden gazebo and installed garden decking boards.

Although these two projects may sound like I have a large space to work with, I do not. The wooden gazebo we constructed isn’t enormous but functional enough to let my family enjoy warm summer evenings and host family parties.quiz

The composite decking also helped. We decided to style it with octagonal shapes and also installed a fire-pit somewhere to keep us warm on nights when we stayed outside into the wee hours.

This made us enjoy staying at home more because we were not ‘stuck’ inside like most people would have felt during the lockdown.

The decking boards had a clip system that made it easy for me and the boys to fasten them together quickly.

It was also a chance to talk to them about how they were coping with the lockdown and not seeing their friends.

Painted Some Walls

Yes, you guessed right, the kids’ room comes first. They had so many ideas as to how they wanted their ideal room to look like.

First of all, we used the internet and explored many options till they finally settled on their preferred choice.

We painted the rooms together and added SpongeBob with a huge smile on his face in the room’s corner.

Please make sure you take precautions when painting and if there would be kids involved, ensure they wear protective gear, especially their faces.

Changed Furniture

Just like other parts of the house, the home furniture also needed some love. Since we were going to be spending some time outside in the compound, we also changed the outdoors’ furniture and the right clothing for the right season.

The outdoor furniture didn’t have to be elaborate since we could simply take the ones inside out should we need to.

My family and I are eco-friendly, so we chose furniture that was in line with that. This is probably what influenced our choice in composite decking as well.

Although eco-friendly furniture can be expensive for some families, they are a worthy investment in the long run.

They also offer premium durability, so I am sure there will be no need to change these sets in a long time.

Prepared To Work Remotely

Although we were stuck inside during the lockdown, I still had to work from home. Honestly, working remotely during the lockdown is not as easy as it may sound.

The motivation was hard to come by, and it took a lot to separate work life from normal home life.

What did I do? My family and I constructed a garden home that served as my office. The key was to get up every day, prepare, and get dressed like I was going to work, and it worked fine.

The garden office helped in making me more productive. As a lover of nature, getting a beautiful view of my garden and some kids’ paintings was enough motivation.

All the work done happened at different points during the lockdown. There were times when the lockdown was eased so we could get some things in.

We also managed to do a few other minor projects, but these top the lot!
