Topical Retinoids

Topical retinoids, have a low systemic absorption from skin. However, there are published cases whereby birth defects were seen in mothers who used topical retinoids during pregnancy. The role of retinoids during pregnancy, therefore, remains controversial and its best to avoid its usage, especially in the later stages of pregnancy. 

Parabens

Parabens are commonly found in the nature at low levels. When consumed in certain foods like barley, they are metabolized to harmless substances. Synthetic preparations of parabens, derived from petrochemicals are used in cosmetics; these are absorbed more readily in the skin and bypass the metabolic process, which means they are present in the bloodstream intact. 

Once in the body, they have various side effects including disruption of the hormone system. According to one study in 2016, in the Journal of Chemistry, exposure to parabens in the prenatal life lead to a horde of side effects, including low-birth weight, obesity, miscarriage, behavioral problems and even impaired fetal growth.
