When it comes to depression, it can take some time for a person to realize and come to terms with the fact they might be suffering. Many habits creep in and they do so slowly, often without warning.
If you do realize you might be suffering then it can take some time to reach out and ask for help but more often than not people won’t know what they’re going through. It’s important to understand the signs of depression and if you do then it will be much easier to realize the need for help. But what are some of the signs of depression to look out for?
Psychological Signs
Symptoms of depression come in two main categories, psychological and physical. Many people suffering will have a mix of both forms of symptoms. Let’s take a look at some of the psychological signs.
Anxiety
One of the signs many people suffer with when battling depression is anxiety. The definition of anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. This can have an effect on all aspects of your life and can often feel so overwhelming that leaving the house becomes difficult.
Low Moods & Sadness
Most people will suffer from a low mood every now and then, but when it comes to depression it seems to hang around for much longer. Constantly feeling sad can become very tiring and will lead to other feelings. In this situation, it’s good to start thinking about getting help as things can start to spiral downwards. When moods are low, other thoughts can start to creep in which, in turn, will make depression worse. This can also lead to a feeling of zero enjoyment from anything you’re doing, which is another sign.
Low Self Esteem
Having a lack of confidence in yourself is never good. Feeling bad about yourself is something no one wants to experience but unfortunately, it’s a common symptom of depression. If you’re feeling like this constantly then it’s a pretty strong sign you might be struggling with depression.
Certain Feelings
Not only are there some clear cut signs when it comes to psychological symptoms, but there are also some low feelings you might experience. Feeling tearful often is very common and can come on at any point, you might be watching television or listening to a song, and all of a sudden feel incredibly sad and tearful.
Feeling guilty or guilt-ridden is another sign that comes up often. This can mix in with having low self-esteem, low moods, and feeling sad. All of these will end up with a feeling of being irritable and intolerant. Whilst this is normal, it’s another symptom to look out for. Many will also struggle with low or no motivation. Day to day tasks become mountains and the want to see anyone, whether they’re friend or family, slowly disappears. If you’re struggling to work, go to the shops, watch television, or look after yourself then it’s time to seek help.
Physical Symptoms
You might not always feel psychological symptoms during depression, some people find their symptoms are more toward the physical side. Here are a few physical signs you might be struggling with.
Low Or Changed Appetite
The main sign when it comes to appetite is it reducing. Many will struggle to eat and won’t eat for days on end. There is sometimes an odd occasion where appetite is increased, but the majority will not want to eat at all. This can affect your weight which, in turn, could lead to feeling bad about your body.
Slowing Down
Many will slow down, in all aspects of their life. The way they walk, the way they talk, even the way they complete certain tasks. In some cases, even your sex drive might be affected. The lack of energy is a common sign you might be suffering from depression.
Sleep
Nearly everyone that struggles with depression will struggle with their sleep. Most people that suffer from insomnia will probably suffer from some sort of depression. They’re two conditions that are linked heavily within scientific research. You may find it very difficult to get to sleep in the evening, or you may wake up very early in the morning.
If you believe you are suffering from any of these symptoms then it’s time to take action. There are plenty of professionals that will be able to help and get you through this tough time. During Covid-19 there are many therapists that offer online help which means you can get the help you need much faster. Don’t suffer in silence, talk to a friend or a professional sooner rather than later.
