High School Paying Kids To Go To School… Really?

Sharing is caring!

A local school around my city is going to start paying their seniors $25 a week if they go to school all week and don’t have any disciplinary actions. After reading this article, I just had to write about it.

First off, I would really like to know who even thought of this idea. The principal said that they’ve tried everything – pizza parties, no uniforms days – to try and get kids to attend. My first thought: why aren’t the kids attending school themselves without incentives? Do parents really not care if their children go to school and graduate? I guess I just come from parents who made school high priority, so it’s weird for me seeing parents that are completely opposite of that.

I also understand that this school district is a lower class school, as well. I understand that the parents probably don’t make a whole lot. But I’m sure there is school buses for these children, at least I would imagine (and if there’s not, they need to put the money they’re paying the children into getting bus service). If so, then getting to school should not be an issue for kids.

It really makes me sad that this is what the world has come to – schools feeling like they have to basically bribe children to get them to come to school. A high school education is a priceless thing – and it’s free, at that. All it costs you is your time and, of course, the effort you put into your school work. But it’s so important to have a high school diploma. I’m not putting down anybody with a GED, but I’ve heard it’s even harder work to get a GED (which is why I do admire people with a GED since they worked hard to get it) so why not go to high school and put the effort in?

Certain things just boggle my mind, and this is certainly one of them.

I would love to hear your opinion about schools paying their students for coming to school each week. Good idea? Bad idea? Let me know your opinion!

  1. I agree with you that it’s totally ridiculous! I’m sure you’ve seen the youtube clip entitled, “Facebook Parenting: For the troubled teen”–Although that father was extreme in some things, he hit the nail on the head (or rather shot the bullet through the laptop, ha!) regarding this generation’s lack of responsibility, respect and gratitude.

    • I actually have not watched that video yet. Everyone has been posting about it on Facebook, though. I’ll have to check it out when I get back from my mini vacation on Thursday. It’s sad that children today don’t have respect and absolutely no sense of responsibility. It just makes me wonder what the world will be like in 10, 20, 30 years from now.

  2. Oh dear, I don’t even know what to say….
I’m seething with anger at both the parents and administrators of this school. Have they totally lost it? I hope other schools don’t follow suit. It’s sick!

    • I 110% agree! It is very sickening that this school district is sinking down to this level that they’re paying the students! Ugh. I’m like you; I hope other schools don’t follow!

      Thank you for visiting!

  3. I don’t think kids should be paid for things they are expected to do anyway. This is the same reason why I do not plan on paying my children to do chores. Once you set that precedent, they won’t want to do anything anymore without getting something in return. Too much entitlement with kids these days. Geez – I sound like an old biddy!

    • LOL! I definitely have to agree with you, though (and I’m only 21!). I never received an allowance when I was a child, and I still got up and did my chores because that was the expected thing of me since I lived in my parent’s house. Children should go to school because it’s what society expects of them – to go out and get an education and with that education get a good career. It’s so sad that the school district feels that it has to resort to such measures.

Thank you so much for visiting!

  4. I have issues with this. There are all sorts of things we have to do (like getting gas) that no one likes to do, but they do anyway. Everyone needs to learn that lesson.

    • Agreed, Amber! And going to school is definitely a good way to learn that lesson. But it shouldn’t be reinforced by bribing them with money. It’s sickening!

Thank you so much for visiting!

  5. I’m shocked! But I’m not too quick to say it’s a bad idea. It’s an interesting concept. I wish we didn’t have to resort to this, but if it works and the school district can aford it then why not? I just wonder what the other grades will think, and if this will have any backlash?

    • That is a good question – wondering what other grades will think. Hmm. It will be interesting to see if the news station will follow up with a story saying how the situation goes.

Thank you so much for visiting!

  6. Wow-I’m a teacher, and I’d love to know how your district has enough money to pay kids-we can hardly pay our educators!

    • It isn’t my district, actually. It’s a district inside the city I live outside of – if that makes any sense! I’m not very happy with how they’re doing it, believe me.

      Thank you for visiting!

  7. You know im sitting here thinking, as I’m older than u Courtney and i have to say i have seen a lot go down since i graduated almost 30 yrs ago. First it was have no more fun at school cuz the bad apples as they said ruined it for the good apples.. Then it was take the simple pledge of Allegiance and make sure to take God out of it… So now we have no more simple things of fun and no more God then i noticed they started building the schools like prisons so u tell me Courntney!!!! Even tho its the most important thing you will ever get in ur life why do children want to go??? The teachers can’t discipline, the principal can only suspend or not let u come back at all

If ur in a fight they don’t give u a chance to explain anymore, ur both just out!!! I think as parents we should stand up more for our children’s rights to get an education… Put God back in the school system…. Realize our children our little people or big people and they are going to have a disagreement once in a while.. It happens to the best and worst of us….now if they are truly a trouble maker than suspend but only then…. Make these children go to school have a truant officers like they did in my day…is this reasonable idk but a person can dream!!!!
