One of the most common concerns that new parents have is ensuring that their newborn baby is reaching developmental milestones at the appropriate times. While baby development stages can be slightly different for each individual child, there are certain general markers that parents should be aware of so they can be sure that their child is flourishing. If you are an experienced parent, you will already be aware of the important stages during your baby’s development. However, if you are a new parent, you may not know the milestones to look out for. It can be difficult to absorb and act on all of the information available now regarding baby development, so many first time parents can feel overwhelmed. So, what exactly are the key stages of baby development? Let’s take a closer look at some of the milestones you should look out for.
Have A Seat
As with all developmental milestones, there is a wide range for when your child should be able to sit independently. Most babies tend to be able to sit between four and seven months of age. This will be the first step of a larger motor-control process that will ultimately result in your child walking and running before you know it.By this time, your baby may also already be able to smile, raise their head while lying on their front, and open and grip their hands around objects. It is tricky business adapting to life in the outside world. While it is not necessarily a cause for concern if your child cannot do these things by this time, be aware of any serious delays and keep your doctor up-to-date with your observations.
Speak Up
Babies vary widely in learning how to utter their first words. Whether it be Dada or Mama, you should hear your baby speak between eight months to, in some cases, over a year old. You should notice that your baby is interested in interacting with others and can maintain eye contact during these interactions.By this time, you should also notice your baby rolling over, not constantly though, and even laughing. While your baby may not understand your jokes or have a very good sense of humour yet, be sure to give him or her lots of positive attention and affection to encourage this healthy development.
Walk It Out
Walking is another big milestone in baby development. There are few moments when new parents get as excited as when their crawling infant suddenly begins to saunter around on two feet. This process can be expected to happen a little later on and usually between nine and eighteen months.By this time, you might also notice that your child can easily pick things up with a pincer grip, can communicate with gestures to indicate what he or she wants, and perhaps even be able to drink independently from a cup. Of course, these actions may take some more time to develop for some children. If you have additional questions or concerns about your child, especially if you are worried that your baby is not meeting these milestones at the appropriate time, please consult with your family physician. No amount of online research or word-of-mouth advice can replace the guidance of trained medical knowledge.
Your Baby Will Develop At Their Own Pace
Babies grow astonishingly fast and most parents will be ticking off these milestones faster than they might expect. However, new parents shouldn’t be too concerned with getting everything precisely right, as long as they have a good grasp of the basics that their baby needs to flourish. Hopefully, now you are in a better position for gauging where your baby is at on the developmental ladder.
