Have you ever watched a sci-fi movie and wondered what it would be like to walk in such an out-of-this-world landscape? While you probably won’t get a chance to actually visit somewhere outside of planet Earth, you can come somewhere close with a destination that really showcases the variety and beauty that Mother Earth has to offer.
Believe it or not, the world is a magical place full of places that will inspire you. They look like they’re straight out of a fairytale novel, a sci-fi film, or something you’ve never even seen before. Some of these destinations might not even be in the most far-flung corners of the globe. Pack your bags and let’s start exploring no spaceship needed.

1. Snowy Mountains, Australia
A region that you should not miss if you are visiting Australia is the Snowy Mountains.
Snowy Mountains are ideal for families or friends during both summer and winter months since they offer a range of activities and beautiful nature to enjoy throughout the year.
Snowy Mountains are home to Mount Kosciuszko where you can discover amazing glacial lakes, but more than that, enjoy the fresh air and the powder-like winter snow all across the mountain.
The Snowy Mountains attract a vast number of visitors from all around the globe and all year round for mountain biking, skiing, relaxation, climbing, horse riding, etc.
Additionally, put Thredbo on your Snowy Mountains bucket list – a pretty alpine village with rich nightlife, cafs, restaurants and everything that you need within a walking distance from your Thredbo accommodation. You can look for a family or single person accommodation at Lantern Apartments’ website, as they always have interesting offers.
2. Dry Tortugas National Park, Florida, USA
Located 68 miles west of Key West is Dry Tortugas National Park. On this island you’ll find Fort Jefferson, a massive and unfinished coastal fortress. This fortress was originally built after the sale of Florida to the U.S. as a way to combat piracy in the Caribbean, However, the frequent hurricanes made Dry Tortugas an unsuitable place for a large fortress of the U.S. military.
Today, you can visit Dry Tortugas to take in the crystal clear water, sea life, wild birds, and coral reef. If you’re a skilled swimmer, you can even take a dive around the many reefs. Accessible only by boat or seaplane, you might think you stumbled onto the set of a pirate movie.
3. Playa Del Carmen, Mexico
Playa Del Carmen might be a popular vacation destination, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have it is a fair share of otherworldly landscapes. Located in Quintana Roo, Mexico, this eastern Mexican destination is in the heart of the Riviera Maya.
Though it started as a small fishing town, it’s now one of the fastest-growing cities in Mexico. The Playacar beach area is the most other-worldly, complete with the whitest sand and the bluest waters.
4. Cappadocia, Turkey
Let’s travel across the globe to our next destination in Turkey. While you might know this region for its extensive history and impressive geography, it’s really famous for its hot-air ballooning. If you’ve seen those Instagram photos of the influencers staring across a hot-air balloon landscape, Cappadocia is that place.
In addition to the extreme number of hot-air balloons, you’ll also discover the many homes and buildings built in the many rock formations known as fairy chimneys. It’s like living in your own fantasy movie.
5. Plitvice Lakes, Croatia
The oldest park in Southeast Europe is also the most dazzling. Plitvice Lakes might be a tongue twister, but this Croatian park is so out-of-the-world it deserves a place on this list. The lakes themselves seem to be resting on a series of stairs, each cascading into the next. In reality, these formed as a result of the building of travertine barriers.
Unlike other lakes, you can basically walk on water here. A series of winding deck pathways will take you along and over the many lakes, near waterfalls, and through surprising pathways. You’ll feel like you crash-landed on a lush, exotic planet. More importantly, you’ll never want to leave.
Explore the Unique
There’s something to be said for exploring the parts of this world that seem far from the norm. From desert landscapes to tropical paradises, these destinations above prove that you never really know what Mother Nature has in store. She’s capable of many unbelievable sights, and you might not have to travel as far or wide as you think.
The next time you’re packing your bag, keep these out-of-this-world destinations in mind. They’re as close as we’ll ever get to stepping foot on another planet.
