Self-care has many benefits. Besides simply feeling better in that particular moment of practice, it also offers many proven ways to manage long-term stress, allowing you to bring more to others and to make you more productive overall. So what exactly are some of these benefits of self-care?  

From helping boost your immune system to discovering a deeper self, here are five benefits of creating a self-care routine. Plus, we’ve even listed a few self-care tips to set you on the right path.

  1. Self-Care Helps You Be More Productive

A self-care practice can essentially get you to slow down. Say no to some of those commitments that don’t serve you or bring you joy and, instead, make time for those that do. For instance, grab a coffee with a good friend or spend an hour doing yoga. Before a big meeting or presentation, even just a few deep breaths to slow down your heart rate can bring you into the present, allowing you to refocus. Avoid time-wasting activities like scrolling Facebook and other social media rabbit holes. Take care of your priorities first to be more productive.

Self-care plays an important role in your immune system or, more specifically, the Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS). Like taking your vitamins and supplements and getting routine exercise, self-care can activate the PNS and put your body into a restful and restorative mode. This, in turn, allows our bodies to decompress from everyday stressors. Incorporating these types of activities into a daily routine allows a coping mechanism to occur to combat our hectic lifestyles, building defenses against nasty colds and viruses that would normally take advantage of our weak immune system. Plus, you’ll have increased energy levels!

As the word implies, it shouldn’t be a surprise that self-care improves your own self-compassion. The better care you take of yourself, the better you will feel. So remember to go easy on yourself and be warm and understanding when things don’t go as planned. Instead of feeling inadequate, practice self-compassion instead of self-criticism. 

Ignore the voice in your head that lowers your self-esteem. Instead, talk yourself up and feel confident. Once you begin to treat yourself with more love and compassion, you’ll also see your life differentlyas part of a whole human experience, rather than making it about you and you alone.

Self-care routines allow you to discover a deeper self you never knew you had. You get to explore what it is you truly enjoy and love to do. While many of us know the answer to this, others find it difficult to pinpoint. So get in touch with your childlike roots and explore through play. Self-fulfillment can bring you back in touch with that inner child that knew exactly what they wanted and, ultimately bring you back into alignment with your current self.

Self-care is not a selfish act, as the phrase might suggest. It’s not saying to your friends and family that you come first instead of doing something for them and spending valuable time. In fact, a self-care routine can keep your energy levels and spirits high so that you can help others adequately. It would be best if you replenished yourself before you can help others. It’s often one of the hardest things to learn, especially for parents who instinctively put their children first. 

Easy Self-Care Practices

  • Take a relaxing bathSoak in a warm bath of Epsom salts or dead sea salt, along with a one-half cup of baking soda, for 2o minutes to detox and reduce stress. After, slip into some cozy cotton pajamas and drink some soothing tea.
  • Dress upOne easy way to improve your overall mood and practice self-care is to dress up in comfortable or stylish clothes. Self-care can enhance your self-image and the perfect dress can do a lot! If you feel insecure about your curves, wear seamless shapewear and other high-quality undergarments to boost your self-confidence. 
  • Practice meditationMeditation is a great addition to a self-care routine. If you’ve never tried meditation, start with five minutes. Over time, try to reach 20 minutes or even an hour. Use apps like Headspace or Calm for more guided meditation tips and tricks. 
  • Eat nutritious foodsNurture yourself and examine your current diet. Look at the areas that need improvement. Take supplements to help you along the way and avoid sugars and unhealthy foods. 
  • Get creativeCreativity comes in many forms, from baking to painting. Find something you enjoy that brings you a moment of Zen and allows your mind to relax.
  • Get exerciseTake care of yourself with some light exercising like yoga or Pilates. Better yet, spend some time in the park or walking around in nature. If you enjoy being on the water, go kayaking or paddleboarding to find your Zen. Whatever it takes!
  • Find some solo timeTake time for yourself to be alone, especially if you’re a mom. Finding some alone time can truly rejuvenate you and is an important part of self-care. Luckily, many of the above practices can be done solo.
