When visiting your doctor, there’s a chance they may recommend you have outpatient diagnostics carried out. It’s a slightly scary term to hear if you don’t have a clue what it means but fear not, as it’s easy to understand when you are informed.

What is Outpatient Diagnostics?

Outpatient diagnostics are tests or procedures a doctor will request are carried out on the patient. These tests are usually non or minimally invasive and don’t require that a patient stays in the hospital overnight, hence the outpatient designation. They can be carried out in a dedicated area of a hospital, in a private clinic, or with your doctor at a private practice (depending on what needs to be investigated).

What is an Example of an Outpatient Diagnostic Test?

There are many different tests which are carried out in a quick manner. These can include:

Blood tests
Image scans like MRIs and CT scans
Breast screening
Biopsy
Endoscopy

When a Doctor Says a Patient Needs an Outpatient Treatment, Does That Mean they’ll be Having Surgery?

Surgery is a possibility, as many modern treatments can be carried out with limited downtime for the patient. For example, a biopsy may be used as a diagnostic test, as can keyhole surgery in the digestive system.

What is Visiting an Outpatient Clinic Like?

Outpatient clinics are a part of the hospital which is half surgery/half clinic. Unlike general surgery which requires someone having a bed and then going to the theatre, an outpatient clinic should see you sitting in a waiting area, going to a private room or theatre, and being seen to quite quickly.

The whole point of an outpatient clinic is that the patient shouldn’t require a hospital bed or need to stay overnight.

Is Outpatient Care Better for The Patient?

It will depend on where you live. For example, in a country like the UK or Canada, where there is a national health system, the cost of a patient having outpatient diagnostics won’t matter. In the US, these procedures benefit the patient much more as they’re cheaper and covered more widely in insurance, so a patient won’t expect to cover a premium.

Is a Patient knocked out During a Diagnostic Test?

It depends entirely on the test being carried out. For example, most imaging tests won’t need the patient to be unconscious, but a patient getting keyhole treatments may need to be put under to help ensure treatment is swift and painless.

Are Outpatient Tests Quick?

Again, it depends on what a patient needs, but most only see a patient taking a break from their routine for a day. Someone getting outpatient treatments or tests shouldn’t expect to have to take much time off work.
