Being stuck at home as a result of COVID-19 can be a real challenge. With work, kids, and feeling cramped, it’s very likely your home life is a bit overwhelming. However, there are a few things you can do to make the stay at home less stressful. Here are a few tips for dealing with home life during COVID-19.
Create Your Own Space
Having your own space to go and decompress is incredibly important when you’re stuck in an environment that’s stressful. For many, this may be their bedroom. However, it doesn’t have to be. It could be a spot in the basement that you’ve set up just for you or even a spare room. Whether this is used as a relaxation space or a space where you can get work done, it’s important to have regardless.
Using the space as your own virtual office space blends home and work environments to gain efficiencies in both. If your job is having employees work from home, you’ll need this space so that you can do your work. Not only will it be beneficial to have this space set up when you need somewhere to go to decompress, but it will be beneficial to have your own area to focus on work. While working from home, having a designated work space that’s out of your bedroom and away from others is the key to success.
Switch Things Up
While you’re bored in the house, consider what renovations you could afford to do. Repainting the walls is an inexpensive but considerable change of pace for a room. In 2018, most homeowners spent between $5,000 and $10,000 improving their homes. Though you’ll likely want to spend less than that, home renovations can be a fun way to liven up your quarantine. Smaller changes like switching up your cabinetry, fixtures, or faucets are all very manageable, relatively cheap, and can make a substantial difference. If things are feeling a bit dull and stale, spice it up with some home updates.
Don’t Forget Your Mental Health
Your mental health is an important thing you must pay attention to during COVID-19. We are a social species and having to social distance is not something we typically prefer.
As a result, you’ll have to implement strategies that help you feel better. For example, four in ten American adults have seen a counselor at some point in their lives. If you’re struggling with adapting to the new normal, a counselor would be a great option for help with that. It may also be worth considering exercising more frequently or indulging in another hobby. You’ll have to figure out what works best for you, of course.
While adjusting to the new normal as a result of COVID-19, it’s important to be easy and gentle with yourself. This is something we have never dealt with before, so there is no real rule book to follow. Your home life, work life, and relationships are going to be tested. Focus on what you can control and use strategies for handling what you can’t, and your time stuck at home will become much more manageable.
