Complete Backflush

A full backflush done at the end of each day helps to remove all the coagulated coffee grounds during operations in the day. For a full backflush;

  • Get equipped with your machine brush and scrub the group heads to loosen those coffee grounds
  • Wash with the coffee machine detergent
  • Repeat until the solution water coming out is clean
  • Rinse with water
  • Pull several shots of coffee out to remove the presence of washing detergent.

Steam Wand Cleaning

Though not all coffee makers use a steam wand, if yours did, it’s important to keep it clean every day to allow steady outflow of the steam out of the machine. Here’s how to go about it.

  • Carefully remove the tip of the steam wand
  • Prepare a solution of warm water and washing soap
  • Sit the steam wand tip in the warm soap solution for 20 minutes
  • Leaving it in the warm soap solution over the night is more advisable

Draining Hose Cleaning

Cleaning the dip-tray drain line of your Espresso machine is another important daily maintenance for your equipment. To do this;

  • Provide an empty bucket
  • Unplug the drain hose from the trap-end
  • All leftover coffee to pour into the empty bucket
  • Add 3 tablespoons of TSP to the dip-tray
  • Transfer hot water into the dip-tray as well to dissolve the TSP
  • Unplug the drain hose from its end to allow the hot water solution to flow through
  • Repeat this until the hot water solution flowing out is clean
  • Now, plug the drain hose back and add another hot water solution to the dip-tray
  • Leave for about 15 or 20 minutes
  • Unplug the drain hose again to allow the hot water solution to flow out along with whatever coffee ground has been dissolved during the 15-20 minutes of soaking
  • If you have a drain hose brush, use it to brush off sticky coffee grounds from the hose interior
  • Finally, rinse the drip-tray and drain hose with clean water

Clean The Portafilters

After a busy day, your portafilter is sure to have collected a lot of coffee oil. You want to clean it daily to avoid getting it clogged and non-functional. Let me show you how to below;

  • Pour hot water into a bowl
  • Add 3 tablespoons of Espresso machine washing solution
  • Put your baskets and portafilters in the solution
  • Make sure they stay under the hot water solution for 15-20 minutes
  • Take them out and brush with warm water
  • Rinse and towel-dry
