Even though fashion rules are very flexible nowadays, there is still some faux pas that should always be avoided. These rules apply to everyone, it doesn’t matter if you’re a man or a woman. While these rules are extremely common, you might not even know that they’re considered fashion no-nos’. Simple rules like don’t wear wrinkled clothes out’, or wearing ill-fitting clothes’ should always be avoided.
One category of clothing that always has rules are shoes. While most of these rules are general, some of them are very specific. There are shoe rules for every type of shoe, from tennis shoes to heels. A common and popular shoe, the slide, unfortunately, has a few rules that people can easily (and often do), break.

Here are some things that you should avoid when wearing slides:
- Never wear socks and slides! This is the cardinal rule when wearing slide sandals. Slides are meant to help let your feet breathe, so why cover them up with socks? Socks should only be worn with close-toed shoes, like tennis shoes and boots.
This is a tricky fashion rule because some A-list celebrities have been seen rocking this look, however, it’s still something that you should avoid doing.
- Don’t wear slides that are too small for you. This makes your toes hang off of the front of the shoe. Not only does it look bad, but can also be damaging to your feet.
- On the same note, don’t wear slides that are too big for you. Having issues walking or constantly putting your slide back on isn’t ideal and can easily be avoided by purchasing the correct shoe size.
- Don’t wear athletic pants with leather, colored, or patterned slides. Mismatched styles like this don’t create a cohesive look and usually look bad.
- Avoid wearing colored slides that clash with colored or patterned pants. A classic example of this is wearing navy slides with black pants (or vice versa), or reds with pinks.
If you’ve ever been guilty of one of these, don’t worry! It’s not the end of the world. Here are some style tricks and pointers for wearing slides.
What to wear with slides:
- Wear a cool pair of sunglasses that match your slides. Since both accessories can either be sporty or trendy, you can easily pair them with whichever style you go with.
- Try pairing your slides with a hat. Even though hats aren’t everyone’s favorite accessory, you can easily pair these two accessories together, because much like sunglasses, you can wear hats with either trendy or sporty clothes.
- Branch out and wear slides that are made from different materials. There are so many options, such as rubber, plastic, cork, leather, etc. Having a few different options of shoes will ensure that you’ll have a pair to match your outfit.
- Use a colored slide to make a statement! Wearing an eye-catching color, such as green slides, is bold and a great fashion choice. It’s not too much that it distracts from your outfit, but it’s not an accessory that will be missed.
Of course, these style tips aren’t going to be used by everyone, but it’s always nice to have some fun and different options than what you might be used to.
