The roofs on our properties are essential to the integrity of the house’s structure. They keep the elements out and keep the insides protected. However, we can sometimes forget about the roof as it’s not something we think about every day. As a result of this neglect, problems like water damage and holes can arise. This is not ideal for any homeowner as it’s a massive inconvenience. Of course, a roofing contractor in Lincoln, NE would be able to resolve the problem. A new roof is often needed when there has been significant damage as it’s often irreparable. A new roof is a good fresh start, although it must be maintained so that the same issues don’t occur.
Clear leaves and debris
Roofs can quickly gather leaves and debris. The wind and rain can blow debris all around, or the surrounding trees can drop leaves onto the roof. It’s inevitable. However, it’s imperative that the twigs, branches, leaves and whatever else is up there must be removed. Large debris like branches can easily puncture a roof if it hits a weak spot or has enough force behind it. A hole in the roof can lead to water getting in as well as pests. Leaves and other debris can build up on the roof and hold water, leading to water damage. Moss is the biggest culprit for this as it’s a thirst trap and can hold litres of water at one time. The water can then be absorbed by the roof shingles over time and cause weaknesses. If the water seeps through to the attic, the dampness can cause mould.
Clear guttering
Similarly to removing debris, you must check your gutters. Debris can get into the gutters, blocking them, and causing water to pool on the roof as it has nowhere to go. This usually happens in autumn when leaves are everywhere. The leaves can disintegrate and cause sludge in the gutter pipes, completely blocking any water from being able to pass through. Pooling water is no good for the roof, but sometimes, it can find its way down the side of a home, which can also disrupt the integrity of the foundation as well as leave horrible marks on the side of the house.
Secondly, check for any gaps or breakages in the gutter to ensure the water is being drained properly. Strong winds or harsh weather can loosen pipes and fittings, so you need to ensure they’re secure so that they do their job correctly.
Check attic insulation
Your roof needs to be checked annually to ensure there are no missing shingles or any tears in the fabric. In addition to this, the attic and its insulation should also be checked to ensure there are no damp patches. Not all roofing concerns are visible at first, so if there is a problem in the attic, it’s a great indicator that an exterior matter needs attention. It’s wise to do this the same time you inspect the roof, but you can also do it after heavy storms and weather alike. Sometimes, water or debris can get underneath the shingles and make their way into the attic.
Ensure your roof is ventilated
Although a roof is supposed to be sealed, preventing anything from getting into the house, it still needs ventilation. If a roof is under immense heat, moisture can appear. This moisture can then cause the sheathing to rot and cause the roofing materials to buckle. The insulation can then rot, and the roof can lose its effectiveness. This often results in needing a whole new roof. This is something a professional roofer can do for you if you’re not sure how to do so or if you do not know what exactly to look out for.
Roof maintenance isn’t so tough when you keep on top of it. Sometimes it is easier to have a roofing professional come and check the roof, but it’s also something any homeowner can do.
