We call it spring cleaning for a reason! After harsh winters, many areas of your home benefit from a deep cleaning. However, as we enter the summer season, you may want to consider doing another round of sanitizing.
Before your summer of fun begins, it’s a good idea to set time aside to work on cleaning your spaces, both indoors and outdoors. Prepare your home to withstand more humidity, heat, and rain during the summer months.
Here are some things in and around your home you can give a good clean to help you get ready for all the cookouts, vacations, and beach trips this summer!

1. Car
Because we’re so used to using our cars every day, it’s easy to forget how dirty they can get after months of driving.
Whether it’s your kids spilling snacks in the back seat or cleats from soccer practice, dirt and grime find their way into the deep crevices of your door jambs and seats. Excess dirt can cause damage to your vehicle, so taking steps to prevent that could save you money in the long run.
Start out by throwing away any trash you find in your car. As soon as your vehicle is empty, grab a vacuum cleaner and get to work! Be on the lookout for any stains that can be sucked up, or consider using a cleaning product to get rid of those tougher stains.
It’s a good idea to bring your car in for a detailing and car wash, or feel free to make it a cost-effective DIY activity at home.
2. Garage
Keeping a garage clean seems like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! Dust and dirt buildup is expected, so it’s best to sweep your floors often.
People use their garages for multiple reasons whether it’s parking a car or storing a lawnmower, garages are constantly bringing in outdoor debris.
Start your cleaning by throwing away unused items. Take an inventory of what you currently have sitting in your garage and make a list of any supplies you need to restock.
Wipe down shelves or storage units to remove dust. Hose down any items that are covered in cobwebs or grime.
3. Grill
Before you throw your hot dogs and burgers on the grill, you must give it a good scrubbing. Grill grates tend to hold on to old food particles and cause parts of the grill to rust.
It’s also a fire hazard to leave your grill greasy and grimy. Taking your grill apart and cleaning every nook and cranny will leave your food tasting better, and you’ll have a safer cooking experience. It’s a win-win!
Using a grill brush to get in between tight spaces will ensure you’re cleaning your grill properly. Soon enough, you’ll be ready to have barbecues with loved ones.
4. Pool
Taking a refreshing dip in the pool to cool off is one of the most popular summer activities. However, no one wants to dive into a slimy pool full of leaves, bugs, and algae!
Performing regular pool maintenance will make swimming more enjoyable for family and guests. Be sure to check your filtration system and brush any areas of the pool that feel slimy or look discolored.
Taking the time to prepare your pool will make future maintenance easier!
5. Trash Cans
Trash never smells good but it’s important to sanitize your cans every so often, so you keep it from smelling even worse.
In the warmer months, maggots tend to enter garbage cans as flies lay their eggs in your trash. Not only is it unsightly, but you’ll also have to go through the process of removing maggots in addition to cleaning your cans.
Prevent maggots from getting into your garbage by keeping the cans clean and adding some baking soda for a fresh scent.
6. Gutters
Gutters are often forgotten about when it comes to home maintenance. Because they’re located higher up on the house, you’d need a ladder to get a good look at them if you’re trying to clear them out.
When it rains, gutters help direct rainfall away from your roof, walls, and foundation to prevent damage that could be costly. Removing debris from gutters allows water to flow uninterrupted.
Just be sure to exercise caution when climbing up a ladder to look into your gutters.
7. Windows
On a beautiful sunny day, you may want to peer out your window and see what’s going on around the neighborhood. Make sure your windows are clean by dusting and removing any dirt you can see.
You must use the proper cleaning supplies and techniques to clean your windows, prevent streaks, and get the best clean.
Giving your windows a proper clean allows you to open them and let fresh air in during the summer months. In addition, any plants in your home will have access to much-needed sunlight.
Prepare Your Home for the Summer
Taking care of your home inside and out will give you more time to spend with family and friends this summer. Go around your home and note any areas that need attention before you plan any road trips or vacations. As a result, you’ll be able to enjoy your summer worry-free!
