You must have heard Goa being known as the ultimate Hippie destination. However, nowadays we consider it a party destination. So, what changed? Or, does hippie mean partying? Let’s dive into how things have changed in Goa in the past few years.
Goa was the last destination of the Hippie Trail. The Hippie Trail was the route taken by people who adopted this lifestyle which spanned from Europe and ended in Goa covering all the countries in-between such as Nepal, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The hippie culture in Goa back then meant nude beaches, cheap drugs and considerably affordable living.
But was there all to the Hippie culture? If so, how could a country like India accommodate such activities? Hippies lived by the principle Make love, not war. They promoted freedom in self-expression and openness. The Hippie lifestyle focused on connecting with nature and their inner self. Their attitude towards life was reciprocated by the Goans. They were not only tolerant but their acceptance of different cultures and diversity is what helped to preserve Goa as the final destination of the Hippie Trail.
Today Goa is no more that sober or quiet. Flash signs, Neon signboards, loud Bollywood music, expensive hotels characterize this destination. It does not feel like an exotic location anymore but another beach of India where the middle-class flock so very often. Youngsters use it as a party destination and have superficial fun by drowning themselves in alcohol and similar indulgences without doing the self-reflection that the Hippie lifestyle promoted.
The partying culture has a selfish emotion attached to it. While the hippie culture respected nature, in present Goa one can find empty beer cans and bottles littering what was once a beautiful white beach with clear waters.
The attitude of the place has completely changed to the extent that there is a beach solely reserved for foreigners so that Indian values are not violated. We often hear discussions about bikini ban as well as scamsters in parties etc which blends Goa with the rest of India. Not to mention the devastating effect such a large influx of tourists has had on the natural resources.
Is all lost? Not at all!
You may not be able to live the authentic Hippie life but if you want to enjoy Goa in a quiet manner, close to nature and meet interesting people, there are still certain ways!
Goa is increasingly introducing Eco-friendly accommodation. Resorts that help you wake up to the sounds of nature, view of the lush greenery and aroma of the fresh air. These eco-resorts are usually built away from large crowds and come with a variety of options. From having 5 start amenities to large tents on the forest floor, you can choose from a great range.
There are several offbeat beaches in Goa that do not attract large masses. Immerse yourself in the crystal-clear waters of such beach and wash away all the stress of the busy life. Food is an important aspect of experiencing the culture of a place. Opt for original specialties and at places that do not have a rush. Savour and enjoy the food cooked with love and devotion to get in touch with the hearts of the Goans.
Choose your party vibe carefully. While certain beaches have late night parties that continue till 3 AM, some of them have a very specific vibe to it. On Kolva beach, you will find soulful Goan music being played while in Ashwem beach you can hear trance and reggae party music being played. There will also be beaches were everything is mixed. Hence it is important to understand which suits your vibe the best, especially if you are looking to connect with people who have similar tastes as you.
It doesn’t matter which part of the country you are in. Whether you are catching a flight from Ahmedabad to Goa, or from Kashmir, Kanyakumari, or the seven sisters, when you land in Goa you are bound to find people who have the same interests as you in one such parties that Goa hosts.
