Whether you’ve chosen to know the gender of your baby before they arrive or not, you still need to get their room ready well in advance. But while choosing colors can come last, the furniture and other essentials need to be in place well before your new bundle arrives home. So, what actual furniture and accessories do you need?
This is the ultimate kit list you’ll need for your baby’s nursery. It’s totally basic, and there’s plenty of room to add your own personality and creativity. Unfortunately, there are a lot of misleading articles online that suggest you need every item of the sun. However, we’ve kept it simple. If someone wants to buy you a baby shower gift, direct them to this list and the things you’re missing! Alternatively, if you’re strapped for cash, most new families are more than happy to sell or donate their furniture via a marketplace, thrift shops, or Craigslist.
Nursery furniture & Kit
- A crib
- A tight-fitting mattress that’s firm and flat (there should only be less than two fingers’ worth of space between the mattress and crib side)
- Changing table or dresser (with plenty of storage below)
- Rocking chair for those sleepless nights
- Alternatively, a comfy armchair or huge bean bag for late-night feeds, you can check these ones out from Sumo Lounge.
- Baby bathtub
- Somewhere to hang adorable tiny clothes: Hooks work if you’re low on space, or a small wardrobe can help keep things tidy
- Highchair
- Baby bouncer
- Car seat
- Stroller
Nursery wardrobe essentials
- Diaper skirts
- Pants with and without footies
- Sleepers
- Socks (you won’t really need shoes until they start to walk)
- Newborn hats (put these in your hospital bag too!)
- Mittens to prevent scratching
- Warm blankets for the stroller
Electronics & Dcor for the nursery
- White noise machine (optional if your baby doesn’t struggle to sleep)
- Baby monitor
- Toy basket
- Shelves for bedtime books
- Bin for diapers
- Breast pump (if you’re breastfeeding absolutely okay if not!)
- Feeding pillow
- Bottle sterilizer
- Bottle warmer
- Night light (nothing worse than waking baby up by accidentally bumping into things in the dark!)
- A quiet fan
- A hanging mobile
- Stuffed teddies
Baby bathing & feeding essentials
- Gentle detergent for swaddles, clothing, and towels
- Diapers (cloth diapers are more sustainable, but it’s good to have both reusable and disposable options available)
- Baby wipes
- Diaper cream
- Baby-specific body wash and shampoo
- Baby oil and lotion
- Nursing pads (for breastfeeding)
- Bibs
- Burping cloths (or additional swaddles)
- Pacifiers
- Thermometer
Although this list seems pretty intense, most of these things you’ll likely have already without even thinking about it! The important thing is not to stress about what you don’t have, as there are always shops and family members who can do a supply run in those first few days while you and your new little family enjoy some quality bonding time.
