Amazing Austin
Visitors to Austin are now spoiled for choice regarding things to do. So much so that all you need to do is decide how you get there. Fly by air charter or incorporate it into a road trip if you want to do it in style. The city’s scene has long had the kind of hip metropolis status that no other Texas city can match.
Austin has a vibrant live music scene that attracts big-name talent, a diverse restaurant scene, and, of course, all that fresh air and access to nature. Outdoor recreation is high on almost every Austinite’s weekend schedule, with nearby swimming holes and hundreds of parks.
Austin has it all, with everything from rugged mountain ranges to hip and trendy bars. It receives over 27 million visitors each year. It hosts a variety of concerts, festivals, parades, and government events befitting a state capital. It, too, has a dual identity. While it has many patriotic landmarks and solemn memorials, its unofficial slogan is “Keep Austin Weird,” It keeps that promise with quirky shops, colorful murals, secret speakeasies, and one-of-a-kind neighborhoods with plenty of atmosphere. Are you ready to discover everything this exciting and one-of-a-kind city has to offer? Here are a few suggestions of things to do in Austin, Texas.
Hearse Limo Tour
This tour allows you to pack your friends in a hearse that’s been converted into a limo or a passenger van wrapped in spooky art to visit historic locations and hear tales of ghosts that haunt these landmarks, making it one of the more unique experiences in Austin that seriously keeps Austin weird. Tours start at $49 per person and last three hours, so you get a lot of entertainment for your money. The tour combines scary stories, Austin history, and a deep dive into some intriguing stories behind some of Austin’s most iconic structures.
Congress Avenue Bridge
Every night at sunset, crowds gather on the Congress Avenue Bridge to watch Austin’s urban bat colony fly from their home on the bridge’s underside over Lady Bird Lake. The 45-minute show is one of those Austin-only events. The Mexican free-tailed bat colony is the most visible in an urban environment in North America, with approximately 1.5 million bats taking flight each night to feed on pesky insects like mosquitoes, making the animal a local hero. However, it’s worth noting that the show is only available from May to October; the bats migrate elsewhere during the winter.
Food Tours
There are some great things to do in Austin that allow tourists to venture outside their comfort zone – but sometimes, just digging into some delicious Texan food is enough to make you happy. The possibilities are limitless, from secret food tours to food trucks to a bus-based food tour with a live band on board.
Barton Springs Pool
Take your sunscreen and a beach towel to Zilker Park for a relaxing day. Here you’ll find the lovely Barton Spring Pool, ideal on a hot day. Furthermore, it is one of the best things to do in Austin to cool off. There’s a small fee to enter the freshwater pool, which is fed by a nearby natural spring, and it’s the ideal place to soak up some of that famous Texan sunshine. Personally, I’d save this for after a few days of walking around exploring; you’ll really appreciate it then.
Franklin Barbecue
Franklin Barbecue, Austin’s legendary barbecue joint, has a big reputation, evidenced by epically long three-hour lines. Nonetheless, head chef and well-known local celebrity Aaron Franklin prepares some of the most succulent sausages and beef ribs you’ve ever tasted, making the wait worthwhile.
Lake Travis
Austin has two lakes where you can go boating: Lake Travis and Lake Austin. I recently went boating on Lake Travis with Float On Boat Rentals. I liked how easy it was to get to the dock and how they even helped you load your belongings into a wheelbarrow and transport them to the boat. We chose the sunset cruise, which was ideal.
Zilker Botanical Gardens
The Zilker Botanical Garden is one of Austin’s most popular tourist attractions, and for a good reason. You’ll walk through themed gardens as you explore the 28-acre park. Among the highlights are a Japanese garden, a rose garden, a cactus garden, and specially curated fields to attract hummingbirds and butterflies.
So there you have it, the best things to do in Austin. Austin is a world-class destination that should be on the bucket list of every American traveler, whether as part of a cross-country road trip or as a weekend getaway.
