Does the air in your home feel stale or dreary? Do you feel an unexplainable weightiness when you step into your living room? Or do you struggle to sleep in your own room at night?
Often, sadness, restlessness, uneasiness, and a general feeling of discomfort can be caused by negative energies stuck in a space. It might be time for an energy reset!
Make your home feel lighter, happier, and more comfortable with these 5 energy cleansing practices:
1. Smoke Cleansing (Smudging)
Regular smoke cleansing eliminates negative energies brought by hurtful words and actions, old/broken objects, sick individuals, etc.
Traditionally known as smudging in Native American culture, it’s the practice of burning (bundled or loose) aromatic plants like white sage, sweetgrass, cedar, and mugwort. Smoke cleansing also infuses the space with fresh positive energy.
How to do it:
- Light the end of a herb bundle with a candle. Hold the bundle in the flame until it is ablaze. Wait until a steady stream of smoke is produced.
- With a feather or your hand, gently fan the smoke onto your body. Smoke your head then move downwards. Also smoke the back of your body. Reach behind as far as you can.
- After smoking your whole body, breathe in a little smoke to cleanse your insides.
- Proceed to cleansing your space. Hold the stick and walk counterclockwise around the room.
- Fan the smoke particularly toward every corner of the room. This is where negative energies build up.
- Crack open a door or window when you’re done to release the old energy.
- Place the burned stick in the abalone shell (or bowl) after finishing the ritual and put out the flame (never leave a burned stick unattended!).
2. Burn Some Resin Incense
Resin incense is a herb blend made of leaves, flower petals, barks, and wood pieces. It can also be small pellets of dried plant secretions. When burned, these plants release a fragrant aroma that drives away stress- and anxiety-causing energies.
The most commonly used resins are palo santo, copal, frankincense, myrrh, benzoin, and dragon’s blood.
Resins are also known to:
- Calm the mind, body, and spirit
- Boosts mood levels
- Boosts concentration
- Purifies the air
- Removes allergy-causing bacteria
- Increases awareness and intuition
Here’s how to burn a resin incense:
- Place a handful of sand or small rocks in a bowl or an abalone shell to insulate heat.
- Place a charcoal tab on top of the sand and light it up. Let it stand for 5 minutes or until ash forms on the charcoal.
- Put your resin blend or a resin pellet on top. Let it produce a steady stream of smoke
- Fan the smoke with your hand or feather. Carry the bowl and start walking to the areas you want to cleanse, gently fanning the smoke.
- Open a door or window to release the unwanted energies.
- Put out the resin by covering it with a layer of sand.
3. Place Healing Crystals Around Your Home
Colorful rocks, minerals, and gemstones are among the oldest tools used in energy cleansing. They’re not just eye candies; they are rich in powerful energies that protect against negativity, bad luck, and evil spirits. Crystals also heal the chakras or the seven energy centers of the body.
To tap into their protecting and healing energies, you can display crystals in any areas in your home that need cleansing or meditate with it. Each crystal offers a specific intention or benefit.
- Amethyst – For mental clarity and sobriety
- Lapis lazuli – Attracting prosperity and abundance
- Selenite – Clearing unwanted energies
- Carnelian – Instilling a positive attitude and overcoming negative self-talk
- Rose quartz – Increasing passion and all forms of love (self-love, romantic love, love for the family, platonic love)
When Should I Perform an Energy Cleanse?
Anytime is a good time for a thorough energy cleanse. But it’s especially important during the following instances:
- When you’re having a bad day or in a low mood – Negative energy lingering in your space may be contributing to what you’re feeling.
- After an argument with someone – Painful words spoken to one another can leave behind negative energy.
- If someone has been ill – Physical illness can release negative energy into your home’s atmosphere. Do some deep cleanse after you or a family member has recovered from the sickness.
- When you’re feeling stuck/making no progress in life – This could be in the areas of career, relationship, business, etc. Progress in life might be hindered by bad jujus in your personal space surrounding you daily.
- When you’re entering a new chapter – Just moved into your new home, getting into a new relationship, got a new job, or expecting a baby? Refresh your energy. Let go of the old and make room for new energy to rule in your life.
Energy cleansing won’t magically solve your problems or bring instant healing. What it does is it teaches you to be more mindful of what you invite into and let go from your life. It teaches you the value of actively pursuing peace.
And in the process, you become a person with a positive outlook in life!
