Leading a Sedentary Life
Not getting enough exercise and sitting for too long can have a negative impact on your spine. Exercise can help to strengthen the muscles of your back, helping to reduce the risk of injury, and keeping you in good overall health.
If you’ve got a job that has you sitting at a desk for long periods, getting up and walking around every now and again is a good idea for improved spinal health.
Having Poor Posture
You can find out how good your posture is easily. All you need to do is push your heels against the wall and stand up straight. If you’re standing correctly, your calves, bum, shoulders and back of your head should touch the wall. There should also be enough room to fit your hand between the small of your back and the wall.
If you’re not standing correctly, take the time to correct your posture throughout the day and train yourself to stand in a more back-friendly way.
Sitting at a Desk with Few Breaks
Office workers, freelancers, and anyone else with a sedentary job is at risk of back problems. Looking at a computer all day with few breaks can put strain on your neck and back. Make sure that your desk is set up in a spine-friendly way, invest in a good chair, and get up every 20 minutes or so.
You could also try chair yoga and other stretches to ensure you move regularly throughout the day.
Eating a Poor Diet
Eating a whole and healthy diet is necessary for good health. It ensures you get all the nutrients your body needs to function properly and can help you to keep your bones healthy.
A balanced diet will also help you to maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight can have a direct impact on poor spine health.
Wearing the Wrong Shoes
Though wearing heels may tie your whole outfit together, it also puts unnecessary strain and pressure on your lower back. Try to wear flat-soled shoes that evenly distribute your weight to relieve extra pressure on your spine.
Hunching Over Your Phone
We’re all guilty of scrolling aimlessly on our phones but hunching over your phone for extended periods of time can cause neck and back strain and puts you at higher risk of injury. Try to put your phone down more often and sit up straight if you are looking at it!
Chronic Stress
As with many mental health conditions, chronic stress can have physical effects on you. One of the common reasons for back pain is stress. If you can take the time to pinpoint the stressors in your life, it would do your back good to try and reduce them.
You could try practicing mindfulness, meditating, and doing back-friendly yoga to ease stress and relieve back pain.
