Traveling with children in town is frequently deemed a hassle since you must be careful to keep an eye on them at all times, don’t forget to bring all the things they might need and keep them entertained at all times. The thought of temper tantrums in public spaces or possible accidents when away from home is often enough to deter most parents from embarking on a trip with their children. But it’s a missed opportunity.
Traveling can be used as a fun educational experience for your children, as they get to see and experience things they might not be able to at home. If you’ve been entertaining the thought of having a family trip soon, here are some places from all over the world that your kids will love.
New York
As one of the world’s largest and most vibrant cities, there’s naturally no shortage of fun and exciting places to visit with your children in New York. Look into your LAX parking options before heading out to ensure you get the best parking spot for your vehicle. Planning is essential when you travel from a busy airport.
The Chinatown Ice Cream Factory in Manhattan is the best place if you’re looking to start your day off with a treat. This family-run business has been making homemade ice cream since 1978. You have the option to try some tried-and-tested favorites such as coconut, durian, black sesame, green tea, mango, lychee, pandan, ube or red bean, as well as more “exotic” Western flavors like chocolate, pumpkin pie, pistachio, mint, strawberry and vanilla.
Since 1904, New York has been the home of The Explorers Club. With stained glass windows and imposing entrance doors, the club headquarters is the perfect place for wannabe explorers. The building is home to a century’s worth of treasures. Percy, the polar bear, is on the second floor. You’ll also see the globe Thor Heyerdahl used when planning his 1947 Kon-Tiki expedition, during which he sailed 5,000 miles in a raft built by hand from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. There’s also a sled from 1909 used in a North Pole expedition. On the uppermost floor, there’s the archive which holds 1,000 museum items, 5,000 maps, 500 films and 13,000 books.
Although New York is known as a concrete jungle, with Central Park being the noteworthy exception, the city has more green corners than you might think. There’s a hidden tropical forest on East 43rd Street. It is even more interesting to consider that the greenery is located inside an office building made in 1967. The huge walls and ceiling create the conditions necessary for the plants to thrive throughout the year, and the oasis is open to the public throughout the year.
If your child loves math, you must take them to see MoMath, a place that blends mathematical abstraction with sensory experiences. And for lovers of all things vintage, there’s the Lexington Candy Shop, a family-run luncheonette that looks just as it did back in 1948. The menu is the same as when FDR was president and includes syrup sodas, malt milkshakes, egg cream and tuna melt.
Japan
As one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, Japan has the perfect blend of old and new that everyone finds charming. The trip is long, so you want to be well-prepared. Check for an affordable spot at Logan Airport parking, and make sure to bring treats, coloring books and headphones that can keep your children entertained during the long hours spent on the plane.
If you visit Tokyo with your children, you can’t miss visiting the Ghibli Museum. Showcasing the work of the famous animation studio, it combines tech and art exhibits with fun activities specifically designed with kids in mind. There’s a reading room and bookstore inside the museum, so if you’ve been looking to get your children to read more, you might just get one of the best opportunities. A rooftop garden with a five-meter tall statue of the robot from “Castle in the Sky” and the Straw Hat Café serving snacks and desserts are some of the additional features.
In Nagakute, Aichi, there’s also a Ghibli theme park featuring life-sized attractions from the movies, including Totoro, the Catbus, Yubaba’s office, the train in Spirited Away, the head of the Forest Spirit, and Sheeta floating down from the sky among many others. Sanrio Puroland is another theme park that hosts shopping places, live shows and other attractions. Hello Kitty is the most popular character here, but there’s also Gudetama, Badtz Maru and Keroppi.
If you have the time, you can visit the island of Aoshima, also known as Cat Island, where there are over 200 cats and only five people. Ōkunoshima is a similar location, the only difference being that this island is filled with rabbits.
Additional Places
The city of Tozeur in Tunisia has entered popular culture as a filming location for Star Wars. Buildings made to represent those on the fictional Tatooine can still be visited in the desert. In-universe, devices known as moisture vaporators were also left on the former set. The Vinicunca mountain in the Peruvian Andes, also known as the Rainbow Mountain in English, is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in the world and a must-see for those who love the great outdoors.
The beauty of the mountain comes from its vibrant color palette, which includes shades of red and turquoise. Located deep in the mountain range, you’ll also spot alpacas and llamas along the way, visit the hot springs and villages and shop from the local vendors. And, of course, there are so many places all over the world featured in children’s books that you can visit, such as:
- The Oak of the Witches in Italy that inspired the tale of Pinocchio
- The Mary Poppins statue in Maryborough, Australia
- Platform 9 ¾ at King’s Cross Station, which is featured in Harry Potter
- The Moomin House in Naantali, Finland
- The numerous statues dedicated to Alice in Wonderland are found in Adelaide, New York and Guildford, England
- The original toys that inspired Winnie the Pooh & Pals are on display at the New York Public Library
Visiting different countries with your children can become an exceptional educational experience if you research beforehand and choose some impressive spots you can see together.
