The lucky teams making it through include Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, and Switzerland. Unfortunately, Albania, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Scotland, Serbia, and Ukraine have been eliminated from the tournament.

Group A

Germany regained its place at the top of the group as they got a goal in the 92nd minute over Switzerland; the Swiss were kicked into second place. On the other hand, Hungary managed to score a last-minute winning goal against Scotland during the 10 minutes of extra time.

This result moved the Hungarian squad to third place with three points, which was not enough courtesy of their goal difference of -3. They were edged out because the fourth-best third-placed team also had three points, but a goal difference of 0.

Group B

Italy drew against Croatia 1-1 when Mattia Zaccagni scored in the dying seconds of the match and helped his team to secure a spot in the round of 16. Consequently, Croatia was knocked out of the tournament as the team was not able to qualify as one of the best third-placed teams. In addition, having already secured the first position in the group, Spain finished the group stage with a 1-0 victory over Albania, who ended their campaign at the bottom of the group.

Group C

Group play at Euro 2024 didn’t leave much to talk about in this round. England took the top position after a goalless draw with Slovenia. England have already taken the first place after a goalless draw with Slovenia. Serbia needed the win but all they could do was play another 0-0 draw with Denmark.

Because of their performance, we can already be sure that Slovenia will advance to the playoffs as one of the best third-placed teams. In fact, Denmark and Slovenia have had the same records but Denmark placed second because they have received six yellow cards compared to Slovenia’s seven.

Group D

Austria pulled off a surprise win against the Netherlands in a thrilling Group D match at Euro 2024. The game took an unexpected turn when Dutch defender Donyell Malen scored an own goal, giving Austria an early lead. The Netherlands fought back hard, with Cody Gakpo scoring an equalizer at the start of the second half.

However, Austria remained composed and Romano Schmid’s header eventually secured the win for them.  This result has shaken up Group D, placing Austria at the top. France was held to a surprising 1-1 draw by Poland, and the Netherlands, though defeated, are still in the running and looking to recover in their final group match against Romania. With all four teams still having a chance to advance, the last round of matches in Group D is set to be very exciting.

Group E

The group stage ended in a rare situation where all four teams had four points after three games. Romania surprised everyone by finishing first, just ahead of Belgium due to a better goal difference, and securing their place in the knockout rounds. Belgium, though a bit disappointed not to win the group, still advanced in second place.

Slovakia took advantage of the situation and moved on in third place. Sadly for Ukraine, even with four points, they made history in an unfortunate way by being the first team ever to be knocked out of the group stage with this points system, ending up at the bottom of Group E due to goal difference.

Group F

Portugal, the 2016 champions, managed to secure the top spot with a game to spare. However, they were taken by surprise when they lost 2-0 to Georgia, who were debuting in the tournament, in their last group match.

Even with this defeat, Portugal moved on to the knockout stage. On the other hand, Georgia amazed everyone by finishing third in their group during their first European Championship appearance.

This unexpected turn had them overtaking the Czech Republic, who ended up at the bottom of the group, much to their dismay. The race for second place was fierce and came down to a late goal in Turkey’s 2-1 win over the Czech Republic. Turkey showcased their strong attack throughout the group stage, earning a well-deserved second place and a spot in the knockout rounds.
