How 5G Is Transforming Mobile Services in Malaysia

Mobile internet in Malaysia is experiencing a powerful surge. Malaysians got their share after two years of network deployment

Mobile internet speed grew 2.3 times – median download speed jumped from 45.57 Mbps to 105.36 Mbps. The path to these figures turned out to be not easy:

  1. The share of 5G connections grew from 6.7% to 41.9% for the period from the first quarter of 2023 to the fourth quarter of 2024, transforming the technology from experimental to mass.
  2. Digital Nasional Berhad achieved 80% population coverage by December 2023, opening the way for a second operator to the fifth generation communication market.
  3. The JENDELA Phase 2 program is aimed at 100% 4G coverage and 80% 5G coverage by the end of 2025 for all populated areas.
  4. U Mobile received the second license to deploy a 5G wholesale network with plans to complete the project by mid-2026.

Growth opened access for Malaysians to smart city, healthcare, and logistics technologies together with growing markets of Singapore, Thailand, and Indonesia.

5G availability is growing unevenly across the country’s territory

5G Availability increased from 20.9% to 32.8% across the country as a whole during the analyzed period. Labuan recorded the largest jump – plus 34.4 percentage points, followed by Penang with an increase of 20.8 points and Kedah with 19.1 points. 

Urbanized territories like Putrajaya and the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur showed more modest growth of 16.1 and 10.4 percentage points respectively. These regions already received basic coverage in the early stages, so operators concentrated on improving quality and increasing the capacity of existing stations.
