How Hobbies Are Changing Over In Chile

Sharing is caring!

In Chile, internet penetration has doubled in the past couple of decades. With it now at 94%, smartphones are ubiquitous, even if home PC set-ups are only a part of middle-class life. But with growing 5G coverage (also over 90%) – who needs laptops and computers? Music, games and social media can be indulged on the go.

High-Speed Connectivity and Chilean leisure

Chile’s aggressive investment in fiber optics and 5G technology is now paying dividends, with a growing tech sector (and technical workforce used as nearshoring for US firms), the average person spends over 50 hours a week engaged in digital media.

It might sound high, but we need to consider that the transition has been greater than in Europe and the US, with more people ditching the television and cable TV. When 150GB of SIM data costs little over $10, there may not even be a need for broadband – that’s over 50 hours worth of 1080p video playback. But high-speed Wi-Fi is common, and 4K and lag-free gaming are now the norm. A professional in a Santiago high-rise and a resident in a remote Patagonian village can essentially access the same cultural capital.

It’s an equalizer, and it’s facilitating local neighbourhood WhatsApps and Facebook groups all around the country. If someone falls pregnant in a remote village with little access to healthcare, they’re turning to AI and online for advice. While it’s no replacement, it’s hugely important in educating the rural populations.

Digital Gaming and Social Competition

Gaming in Chile has also shifted, with adults now making up the largest pool of gamers, much like it is in the US. But unlike the US, mobile-first Chilean habits mean that most games are played on mobile. And this isn’t just Santiago Metro commuters, but everyone, wherever they are, turning to their phone primarily for gaming. It’s the digital sobremesa, a social lubricant that maintains community bonds during the fragmented hours of a modern work schedule.

Of course, PC gaming and long-form gaming remain options for some, mostly in the suburbs, amid increasing eSports participation. There are over 900 pro eSports players in Chile, bringing in several million, with Gonzalo “ZeRo” Barrios standing out as the biggest talent with a hugely impressive win streak. It may not be considered a unique hobby for children, but that’s precisely why they’re batting above their weight.

New Online Entertainment Spaces

Gaming and entertainment are certainly becoming more specialised, with iGaming and sports betting seeing more activity than ever. Strangely, it’s partly a result of recent trust built in the payment sector – the likes of Redcompra and Webpay have made it easy to deposit, and the platforms feel safe.

Players often start by checking the likes of Awintura Chile reviews to make sure they’re dealing with a reputable platform (even if the payment method feels safe). Of course, football is the number one sport, so Awintura betting on Chile often centres around weekend fixtures and a way to make the game more exciting. The appeal often starts with an Awintura welcome bonus – most platforms have these – and they allow new users to get a head start and encourage them to try out their features. Then there’s the Awintura online casino Chile section, which is actually an even higher growth aspect of iGaming, as adults find more and more innovative games – it’s far from what we think of as traditional casino games.

These entertainment options, like Awintura, are good evidence of Chileans finding new ways to spend their free time – particularly as mobile-first casino games are more able to compete with mobile-first video games than with PC games. In other words, when so much of their time is spent on smartphones, it’s easier to provide alternative entertainment options.

National Streaming Habits

Streaming video remains king. While major platforms like Netflix are available (2.5 million Chilean subscribers, which is well over 10% of the population), YouTube, Instagram and TikTok are the most used apps. These three provide not just general entertainment, but for the first time, localised entertainment, where they can see people from their towns and backgrounds represented online, expressing themselves, even selling them stuff via TikTok shop.

Because Chileans are so adaptable and mobile-savvy, they become testing grounds for new UX updates. Sometimes, they can actually be leading the way for new updates and products and used as test data.

The sheer volume of time spent on the phone, often over eight hours a day, shows that watching TV has been eroded here before the US. YouTube is even a primary educational tool, not just entertainment, though the two merge as it becomes the single most powerful tool for teaching English. In 2011, 10% of Chileans could speak some English. Today, it’s closer to double, and it’s mostly down to globalised mobile entertainment consumption.

Of course, Spanish has more native speakers than English, so Chileans are also broadening their culture across the world, consuming entertainment from Spain, Argentina, and many other nations.

Whether it is an Awintura registration Chile or asking AI for advice about finances, the trusty smartphone is always there, with near-perfect data coverage, to entertain Chileans.
