Headaches and migraines are incredibly frustrating. They prevent you from carrying on with regular, everyday activities, and can even mean you need to cancel plans and rest. For most people, headaches and migraines are also a regular challenge that they must put up with often. However, despite their frequency, you don’t have to let them affect your family life as much as they have been. Take these actions to see if they make a difference: 

Seek Help

Before exploring management techniques to limit the impact of your headaches and migraines on yourself and your family, consider seeking help for reducing their frequency. 

For example, you may be surprised by how routine chiropractic care may help posture feel more natural while reducing neck tension, headaches, shoulder tightness, and low back fatigue. Chiropractors and physiotherapists are great resources for identifying any neck dysfunction that may be contributing to or causing your headaches. 

Manage Triggers

While dysfunction in your neck or poor posture may be the cause of your headaches and increase your sensitivity to them, you may also have triggers. According to the American Migraine Foundation, there are several common triggers, including stress, sleep changes, hydration, and diet, among others. Awareness of your triggers puts you in the driver’s seat. If you know what causes your headaches and migraines, you can actively try to avoid them. 

Create a ‘Migraine Day’ Plan

Headaches and migraines can occur when you least expect them. When they’re debilitating, you can’t always be the functioning parent your children need you to be. On days like that, you need a ‘Migraine Day’ plan in place.

This plan can include backup childcare you can rely on, simple meals that require next to no preparation, and kid-friendly quiet activities, such as coloring books, building blocks, and playdough. Having this plan in advance takes all the thinking out of it on a day when you’re feeling at your worst. 

Set Home Routines

If you’re the one who sets the rhythm in your home, you may feel as though your entire household descends into chaos when you’re incapacitated. This highlights the importance of setting regular, easy-to-follow routines for everyone. When everyone knows what’s expected of them, whether you’re available or not, home life can continue as normal. 

Identify Your Support Systems

When you experience frequent headaches and migraines, there may be multiple occasions when you need help from someone to take over your everyday activities. Identify your support system before you need them.

This may mean that a spouse, a family member, or a friend steps in to tackle important tasks like picking children up from school and handling pressing tasks like preparing after-school snacks and activities. 

Change Your Lifestyle Habits

A few lifestyle changes may be all it takes to reduce the number of headaches and migraines you experience. The less you have, the more in control you can be of your everyday life. 

Knowing that poor sleep can be a trigger, maintain consistent bedtimes and wake times. Diet and hydration are also major triggers, so stay hydrated throughout the day and don’t skip meals. 

Headaches and migraines can certainly upset your day and disrupt family life. However, they don’t always need to. If you seek help for them, have plans in place for your children, and make a few lifestyle changes, they may start to become less of a burden.
