I really hope that you’ve gotten your copy of TinkerBell and the Legend of the NeverBeast and are enjoying it with your family! If not, why haven’t you? It’s filled with a great story, beautiful animation, and gorgeous music! Today I am sharing some insider information on the music from Bleu. Bleu produced all of the songs on the film, wrote a couple of them, and worked on the sound palette. We also talked to Brett Swain, the music supervisor. There is some really interesting information I learned, and I’m excited to share it with all of you!
Bleu talks about the unique sound for the film:
Bleu: Steve [Loter – the director] really wanted something unique for this film. He really wanted new sounds. And obviously there’s this huge looming figure in this film, the NeverBeast, and his world of the forest and cave. And he wanted to make sure that this was something that you hadn’t experienced before. So the big challenge for me was to come up with this unique sound color palette for him and all the other characters of the film.
Bleu came up with a pretty unique thing for Gruff’s sound:
Bleu: I’ll talk briefly about the instruments that we used for Gruff ’cause obviously this was kinda the initial big goal was to get sounds for him in particular. One of the wonderful things we stumbled upon are these planters from the store. And as you can see here, all the ones that you use for outside have a hole in the bottom so the water can drain, which actually makes them perfect for placing on the cymbal stands. It’s actually amazing how perfectly it worked out. We got dozens of pots of all different sorts. And ’cause they have a lot of overtones and they’re kind of dissonant, we ended up using a lot of these in some of the more eerie scenes for Gruff.
Bleu came up with another great instrument called the dulcitar:
Bleu: I developed this with the percussionist who worked with me on the film, Joe Siders, and I call it the dulcitar. I knew that I wanted to use acoustic stringed instruments on the film ’cause I have a big background in that and alternate tunings and low strung guitars and high-strung guitars and all these sorts of different things. But I didn’t want it to be an acoustic guitar score ’cause again that has a specific connotation of folk music or country music or the west and that kinda thing. I didn’t want to place it in that territory. And we ended up coming up with this idea. And it’s really cool. It actually takes two people to play it and we use these dulcimer hammers, which are normally used to play hammer dulcimer as you might imagine.
Here’s a video I took showing them playing the dulcitar:
They used this dulcitar for Fawn’s character because it has such a beautiful sound – and I definitely agree that it works perfectly for her!
It was really neat hearing about how the sound of certain characters came about, especially with the unique instruments. Every time I watch TinkerBell and the Legend of the NeverBeast I always think about what I learned. I hope you’ll remember these facts as you do, too!

How fun! It’s totally fitting that the soundtrack to Tinker Bell would involve a made up instrument. I love it!
I loved this movie, so it’s really cool to get a look at how they did the sound track. You have to get pretty creative to make a sufficiently fairy sounding musical score. Really cool!
It’s really cool to see how they put together the soundtrack. Thank you so much for sharing!
