Golden Visa programs are changing. Many countries now look to other types of investment instead of just real estate. This is clear in places like Portugal. Portugal’s program has new options that are easier and may help people earn more. These new choices often involve things like venture capital, scientific research, and giving money to local culture. This helps bring in money from outside and supports local jobs and people. If you look into these new ways, you can change up what you invest in. You also keep the chance to live in another country.
A big reason for this change is the Portugal citizenship by investment program. This is not a direct “citizenship by investment” plan. It gives people a way to get citizenship after they have a Golden Visa for five years. People can no longer use real estate as the main way to get this residency. Now, they look for other ways to invest that help the economy grow and bring in new ideas. These ways come with a different set of benefits:
- Fund Subscription: Now, the most popular way is to invest at least €500,000 in a private equity or a venture capital fund that meets the requirements. These funds are run by professionals and need to put at least 60% of their money into Portuguese companies. This way, you can spread out your risk and maybe get some good returns, all without having to manage property.
- Scientific Research: You can move at least €500,000 to public or private scientific research places. This way can work well for people who want to help move forward with science and technology.
- Job Creation: You can put at least €500,000 into a company in Portugal, and this company has to make five new jobs that last. Or, you can choose to make at least 10 new jobs without moving money that’s required up front. Doing either of these is a direct way to help with jobs and help the country’s money system grow.
- Cultural Heritage: A cheaper way is to give at least €250,000 as a donation. This money is to help keep the arts going or to help fix up important parts of the country’s culture.

Why the Shift Away from Real Estate?
The move away from real estate in programs like the Portugal Golden Visa 2025 is something the government planned. The main reason is to direct money from people outside the country into areas that create jobs and support new ideas. They also want to help projects that matter to the country. In Portugal, people from other countries were buying a lot of real estate. This made the market too hot and caused problems with housing for many people. By stopping people from using real estate for this program, the government now wants steady and fair growth for the economy.
For investors, this change means they need to think again about their plans. The new investment options give people a way to be more involved in a country’s economy. This could help investors make more money and feel like they help more, too. In many big cities, buying a place is no longer a choice if you want to get a visa. Now, these new choices fit better with what today’s economies want for the days ahead.
