Common Signs Your Private Well Needs Treatment

Sharing is caring!

We use water in our homes for different uses and it’s hard to imagine daily life without it. Having safe drinking water is one of the luxuries we don’t appreciate until it’s gone. As water touches almost every room, it affects how long your appliances and plumbing fixtures will last. Water quality issues not only impact your home but pose a health threat if not handled carefully. And water quality issues are often common in homes with private well. The wells are not regulated and issues lurking in a private well soon start to show their effect.

Here are some telltale signs of water quality issues:

Odour in Water

Bad odour coming out from your water is not only frustrating but detrimental to your pipes. If your water smells like rotten eggs, it’s highly likely that it may be due to presence of hydrogen sulphide gas in your water supply. Hydrogen sulphide can corrode metals and can cause black staining on silverware and plumbing fixtures.

However, if you experience the smell only when using the hot tap, it could be due to chemical reactions taking place in your water heater.

Water has Bad Taste

If your water contains metallic, chalky, or bitter taste; you may be having contaminants that need to be removed. While the tap water tastes funny due to presence of chlorine which is added as a disinfect to kill micro-organisms. However, well water may be contaminated with other impurities that may be imparting that the bad taste. It is best to get a water test done to know for sure what’s in your water.

Water is Cloudy

Cloudy or milky water is likely due to trapped air in the water pipes and should be short lived. There may be leaks in water supply which could cause air to enter the pipes leading to formation to micro-bubbles.

If you notice cloudy water, it is recommended to fill a clear glass of water and let it stand for a minute. If the bubbles clear up from the bottom, air may be trapped that needs to be flushed out of the plumbing system. On the other hand, bubbles clearing from top to bottom indicate the presence of rock, stone, sand or dirt in the pipes. But if you see the cloudiness even after 24 hours, there’s something wrong in your water and a thorough water test needs to be conducted.

Water Leaves Stains

You may sometimes notice stains on your bathroom tiles, bathtub, and even on your clothes. These stains could appear due to presence of iron or manganese in water. Lower pH of water could also be an issue leaving blue green stains on your plumbing fixtures. If you witness any of these, you need to get a detailed water test done. A specialized well water treatment equipment would then be installed to remove iron and manganese from water.

Once you have water test results with you, a water treatment company can recommend the best system to treat your well’s water. It is worth noting that these systems are expensive and need frequent servicing to keep enjoying high quality water.

Many governments and local councils provide financial help in the form of well water grants to homeowners. These grants help to alleviate the quality of water running the home without breaking the bank.
