Crabbing – a Great Family Activity

Have you ever been crabbing? If not, you should try it out. Crabbing has all the elements of a great family outing rolled into one. Now, it might not be the go-to household activity for some, but that’s all going to change. Crabbing is one of the most wholesome and active outings you can have. Not to mention it’s a great learning tool for kids. If you’re looking for something to do in the warmer months, you should really give crabbing a try.

Here are a few reasons why crabbing is a great family activity.

New skill sets for kids

When you go out crabbing with your family, what you’re actually doing is engaging in something new. It’s a new skill set to present, especially to your kids. If they’re not knowledgeable when it comes to choosing bait and lines, they sure will be by the end of the day. To get you started, according to The Crabbing Zone, the best bait for crabbing is chicken necks, bunker, or chicken legs. With a little more reading, you can also learn the best conditions to utilize these baits for a more successful experience. Imparting that ability and lesson to your kids will give them the confidence they need during the activity. It may not translate immediately as they may want to stick to their phone. But sometime down the line, they’ll be going through the inventory of ideas and knowledge bases that they have, and catching crabs will pop up. That’s good parenting. That’s even better teaching. Take them out to the water and give them that experience.

Escape from technology

In this day and age of cellphones and limited human contact, having a reason to go out and get some fresh air is invaluable. We’re so attached to our phones these days. Just by being out in the water, you get that primal feeling that can’t be replicated with any sort of technology. You feel that connection to nature. There is a great payoff to catch anything in the wild. It can’t really be explained. Being able to catch your own food speaks to that part of our brain that echoes back thousands of years. Being able to experience that as a family is bound to bond. No doubt, you’ll want to go again and again.

Crab is nutritious!

The nutritional benefits of crab cannot be overstated. For one, they’re high in phosphorus. In our body, the amount of calcium we have is dictated primarily by an exchange with phosphorus. Having enough phosphorus in our system makes sure we keep our bone density over time. On top of that, crab meat has been shown to have high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, the same kind people pay top dollar for in the form of supplements.

Having it in its natural form will always be more bioavailable than a supplement. Having a freezer full of good, healthy, and nutritious meat gives you a great dinner option throughout the year.

Providing a skill set, giving good, nutritious food, and exposing your kids to nature, are just a few of the many benefits to going crabbing. You’ll find, along the way, that spending that time together will bring you closer as a family. You might argue or have your own opinions on how to catch crabs. That’s normal. But ultimately, you’ll be together. That’s what matters.
