Design Hacks That Help Your Home Look Bigger and Brighter

Sharing is caring!

Big, beautiful spaces are the ideal to live in. For most of us, however, that massive, open-concept, and beautifully designed home is not going to be our reality. Most people today live in apartments or in small homes, and that is okay. You can do more with small spaces simply because you are forced to be creative and being creative is by far the most important component to great interior design.

There are many ways, for example, to make even a small home feel bright and spacious. Some are visual tricks; others will quite literally remove bulk from your floor, so get inspired with these top design hacks:

Install Custom Shutters

When your home is small, you don’t have the space for curtains. Even if you place the curtains on the sides of your windows to bring in the most light, they will still be bulky and are still going to restrict light. Polywood shutters have been made to measure fit directly within the frame, allowing you total control over light with none of the bulk that curtains traditionally pose.

Keep the Floors Clear

It can be very tempting and very easy just to overload your floors with items. From furniture to storage, simply because things can be tucked away. A great way to expand the space and make it feel like it flows is to get things off of the floor. For example, instead of a couch that sits on top of the floor, get one on legs that is elevated above it. Instead of a bookcase, install floating shelves. By freeing up the floor, you expand your walking space and lift design elements up so that your home feels bigger

Use Reflective Surfaces

Glass, mirrors, and glossy surfaces will do wonders to reflecting light throughout your home, making even small spaces feel brighter and, therefore, bigger. The larger these reflective items are, the more of a statement they will make as well. Take mirrors. A full-length mirror is going to do more for brightening a room than several small ones. Not only will it offer more light, that large mirror is going to make your home feel less cluttered as well, just because it is a larger focal point in your home.

Install Seamless Storage

Seamless storage blends in with the walls. It looks like it should always have been there like it was built into the very bones of your home. It can also be easily installed at any point in your home’s life. You can even add a whole wall of cupboards and have them look natural and seamless by having them fitted properly.

You want seamless storage because it allows you to put everything away safely and beautifully. Design can only do so much when you have clutter drowning out your creativity, but bulky, large storage furniture can take away from the flow and block out essential light. To free up your home so that it looks and feels bigger, you need hidden places to store everything you own.
