September 8th of this year was Grandparent’s Day. I wanted to make it special for my husband’s parents, as well as my dad since it has been a rough year for him, so we’re thinking about good fathers day gifts for grandpa. Personalized and handmade gifts are the best, and since I’ve been wanting to start painting things, I thought what better time than now? With this easy, fun personalized grandparent’s plaque, you’re sure to make your child’s grandparents (or even your own!) smile and hang this up in their home with pride! Here are the steps to make this fun, personalized gift for grandparents, or you can simply get a portrait of your grandparents prepared on the basis of an old, classic picture to create a lifetime memory for them to cherish.
There are only a few simple tools you need. I bought the two wooden plaques at Michael’s. If you have more than one child (or, if you’re making this for your grandparent’s and have siblings or cousins) you’ll, of course, need more heart plaques for each child. You can always make this without the names, but this is definitely very personalized and adds a nice extra touch! Other items you need, of course, are paint. For this one I used purple, black and white. These are all Craft Smart acrylic paints, also from Michael’s. It’s a nice, cheaper option for simple crafts like this. The paint brushes were in a value pack that I’ve had for awhile. I’m not sure where I bought them from, but you can get value packs of brushes at just about any craft store, plus Walmart. (You will also need an eye screw and a picture hanger – which I purchased at Home Depot.)
I started out by first painting the top/front part of the bigger plaque purple. I did three coats until it looked how I wanted it to. I love the vibrancy of the purple. So pretty! (By the way, I did my dad’s this color because he went to Elder High School and their colors were purple and white.)
Next I did the sides purple on the heart. I realized while doing the side of this and the bigger/top plaque that I *probably* should have sanded them before painting. But I don’t think it’s too big of a deal… it still turned out great, I believe! At least I know for the future! 🙂
Next I completed the top plaque. I put white on the second level, then I put more purple on the very bottom, and a strip of black between the purple and white. I love how it turned out!
And the heart is finished! I painted all the sides purple and then went back and put a line of black. Pretty sharp, I think! I also did paint the backs of both pieces.
These are both pieces before I did the writing. Since this one was for my dad, I wrote “The best dads get promoted to grandpa.” The one for my mother and father-in-law, I write “The best parents get promoted to grandparents.” For the heart I wrote my daughter’s name and her birthdate. I did all the writing freehand. I didn’t use any stencils. I was kind of nervous, since I had never really “written” with paint and brushes before, but I think it turned out pretty good! I hope that you think so as well.
And here is the finished product! To finish up this gift for grandparents, I put a layer of Mod Podge on top to seal the paint. To attach the heart to the top plaque you just take the eye screw and attach one part to the bottom of the top plaque and the other part to the top of the heart. Then just put a picture hanger on the back of the top plauqe – and you’re done! You can put it in a pretty bag and give it to your grandparent’s, or your child’s grandparents! This gift for grandparents is wonderful! They are sure to display it with much pride in their home for all to see!

I’m a 20-something stay-at-home mother and wife. I have an amazing husband, a beautiful daughter, two loving dogs, and a lazy cat. I wouldn’t change my life for anything! I love to read, listen to music, cook and blog!
Look at you, you crafty mama!!! It came out great! Love it!
This is really cute! I don’t think my dad would like something like this, but my mom would absolutely go crazy over it! Maybe we’ll make her one as a Christmas gift this year.
That is super cute. You should seriously set up a shop. I would definitely purchase that.
This is a very cool gift that I’m sure any grandparent would love to receive!
It should really make grandparents so happy. Nice idea. And its unbelievable that you wrote the words at freehand. Very good handwriting then.
I wish my grandmother were still alive she would love gifts like this. Its sweet when you recieve gifts from the heart no matter how big or small they are.
This is such a cute idea. I’m not crafty at all but I think I could manage this.
I completely agree with your sentiments about hand-made gifts. I swear my family loves it so much more if I make them something instead of buying them something expensive. This was such a fun idea and a great way to add your family’s personality to a meaningful gift. I’m sure your dad will hold it dear for years to come. 🙂
This is a great idea for grandparents. I know If I was a grand parent, I would love getting something like this.
Great project! My little sister made a similar one for my grandma as well, but she drew & painted little veggies.
Oh – what a cute craft and sweet idea. I love the quote on there. It actually made me tear up and miss my own dad.

Those are awesome! 🙂 I was just talking about grandma & grandpa crafts on the weekend. My grandaughter gave us a wooden plaque at 1 year old (her Mom of course!), saying “You fill my world with love…” I still have that on my office walls and she is now 17 years old. Precious. Thanks for sharing yours with me… 🙂
My husband and I usually makes gifts almost exactly like these for birthdays and Christmas gifts. Homemade gifts are some of the best out there!
What a fun craft.. SOOO love it.. I saw that saying the other day for the first time and thought it was soo cute.. thanks for sharing, sooo gonna make this for Christmas presents

Turned out great!! I love the idea, we will have to try this one 🙂
This would make a perfect Christmas gift, would have to change it to Grandma though.
If you hadn’t told us you’d made it, I would have thought it was from a store. Great job!

I love Mod Podge and use it for so many things. This is a very creative idea you came up with. I bet the Grandparents were happy to recieve their treasures..
What a wonderful gift for grandparents. I’ve done toll painting myself (years ago). I have been thinking about getting back into it. (Can you tell I stumbled upon some of my old artwork?) I’m sure grandpa will LOVE such a thoughtful gift.
OH that is adorable!! My In-laws just love getting crafts like these from the grandkids! I should plan this for Christmas from my kids.

It’s perfect. We wanted to celebrate on the day but grandma and grandpa were out of town this year. 🙂
That is so sweet I almost cried. My dad passed away 3 months ago and my little grand daughter was the apple of his eye. He would have loved one of these.
I’m so sorry for your loss, Dawn! I understand your pain, though – my mom passed away 4 months ago, which is why this just says grandpa. I know my mom would have loved this, too. *hugs*
This is such a cute idea. Would be a great gift for Christmas!
What a fantastic idea – I can think of so many different situations you could get it to work for as well thank you 🙂 x

I love making gifts! This is a wonderful idea that I am going to do for Christmas for my husband.
I love personalized gifts. I think they send the message to the recipient that you took the time out to choose a special gift for just them.
I love those color choices of yours.
You may try water stain that paint stores have.
Looks like the raw wood is maple.
So cute and easy to make, thanks for sharing
This is such a great craft. My mother would love to get this from my children.
What a great sign and a great saying! I love the personalization of this project. I can see there could be many uses for something like this.
This looks like a simple and fun thing for the kids to do. We did decoupage for my mother in law from my daughter.
Oh you did a really great job on this project. It’s really cute!
I’d like to have my son do something like for my mom but he’s not really into this kinda stuff which sucks 🙁
VEry cute! you should open a shop!
Love the color scheme and that is definitely something that little kids can get involved in, even if it is just leaving their handprints and have the parents write in name and date.
These tags look awesome , I must tell you 🙂
