Home Improvements That You Need to Plan for This Spring

Sharing is caring!

The winter weather tends to put a lot of home projects on pause. The moment that the ice and snow have melted away, you can get back to business. So, what are the home improvements that you should put at the top of your to-do list when spring arrives?

1. Inspect Your Sump Pump

It rains a lot during the spring. If you don’t have a working sump pump, you might have some serious basement flooding when it storms.

How do you make sure that your sump pump is in good shape? The easiest way to test out a sump pump is to slowly dump a bucket of water into the sump pit to see whether the pump automatically turns on or not. If it does, then it’s redirecting the water away from your foundation and doesn’t need an upgrade. If it’s suspiciously slow or not turning on, you need to get it fixed or replaced as soon as possible.

Keep the puddles outside of your home!

2. Waterproof Your Basement

Better yet, if you want to keep your basement nice and dry, you should have it professionally waterproofed. Contact a basement waterproofing contractor to see what services you should sign onto to protect your home. They can offer services like foundation crack repair, plumbing repair and yard grading to make sure those spring showers don’t make their way inside. Your basement will be completely water-tight by the time they’re done.

3. Clean Out the Gutters

Normally, you’d see cleaning out the gutters as a chore for a fall maintenance checklist alongside cleaning your chimney and putting all of your gardening equipment away. But this home improvement is just as essential right after winter as it is right before it. You’ll want to clear any dead leaves, sticks and grime out of the gutters once the snow is gone.

Why is this important? Dirty, clogged gutters won’t direct water to the downspout and away from the house. Instead, the rainwater will spill over and soak into the foundation
