What are the advantages of the visual works of children? What support would you give them? In several ways, one can say that when children are between the age of two to five years old, they are at their heyday of drawing and painting. During these years, the parent would notice their children’s love for marking and sketching several things with absolute disregard. These are the years that parents are left with a massive collection of artworks.

These are the periods that parents get to experience the artistic talent and outlook of their children. Drawing and painting enhance innate abilities, cognitive development, early writing, and confidence.

PHASES IN DRAWING

Most kids seem to find drawing simpler than painting since they can control it better by using pencils, crayons, and felt-tip pens. Although they also love the visual and sensory nature of painting. It is vital that they also explore painting.

The speed at which children reach these stages is associated with other developmental areas, like hand gestures, and their interest in drawing. By age four or five, many children may be able to illustrate a human or a familiar object like a house in an identifiable way.

Materials discovery

In this first phase, you may notice that your child simply wants to experiment and see what colours and markers can do. If the child likes the materials they use, they will fill up the paper with drawings.

Making marks through repeated gestures

Under this next phase, children use several repeated gestures as a form of communication. You may see many rounded shapes and straight lines. During this phase, children’s drawings are more targeted.

Using marks and shapes to portray the universe

Many children start to draw at the age of 3 with a clear objective of illustrating an individual or an item. They may tell you what they want to draw at the beginning but the result may look different. They may also choose to relabel what they have drawn if it seems to resemble something else or they think you would be interested in the relabelling.

The first gestures they try to illustrate are humans, often without arms, legs, or midsections.

Some identifiable drawings of humans and common things

From about age four, children begin to create more representational drawings, particularly of humans because they have more drawing experience. Humans begin to have legs and limbs that may break open from the head. Hair and eyes are always an afterthought.

At this phase, they may start to talk aloud as they draw in a way to direct themselves and bring the drawing to life. Also, they may decide to change their minds once they realize they are illustrating something different from their initial thought.

Increased knowledge and awareness

Children begin to draw with improved competence from age five. They deliberately select colors, attempt to illustrate actual images and add more details to their drawings. Around age five to seven, they begin to understand the differences in their intentions and what they have created. It may lead them to become discouraged or seek help. It is at this stage they begin to compare their drawings to other children’s drawings. It may cause dissatisfaction in their drawings.
