How Much Do Prescription Reading Glasses Usually Cost?

Sharing is caring!

Are you trying to figure how much prescription reading glasses will cost you? If yes, you should check out our guide here on the average prices. Maybe you haven’t been up to date on your carrot intake, so you’ve decided it’s time for prescription reading glasses.

First of all, it probably wasn’t the carrots, since that’s actually a health myth! Vitamin A in carrots improves your vision, but not necessarily more than any other food rich in the nutrient.

Second, purchasing your first pair of prescription glasses can be a little intimidating. They’re also a huge investment if you’re unfamiliar with the way they are priced.

But don’t worry! This guide is to help you understand the average price of prescription reading glasses and what affects their cost.

The Average Cost of Prescription Reading Glasses

No matter how you’ve come across the decision to buy reading glasses, you should know that the average cost comes out to around $200. However, prescription reading glasses in the U.S. fluctuate in price pretty dramatically, with some pairs costing as low as $8 and some as high as $1,000!

Why is this? Well, there are a few reasons…

Health Insurance

Whether or not you have health insurance can greatly affect the amount of money a pair of glasses is going to cost you. Normally, if you’re going to an optometrist to figure out your prescription, that check-up will also end up costing you some money that will add to a total amount.

So if you have health insurance, normally your provider will help you out with the cost of both a check-up and a pair of glasses. If you don’t you pay for these things out of pocket and also have some limited options, some of which can be cheaper (like the glasses you find in Walgreens or CVS).

Frames

Frames themselves can account for a large or small cost when it comes to glasses. You can buy non-prescription $12 glasses from a store, knock out the lenses, and pay to have ones with your prescription put in separately.

However, frames can range in price depending on what they are made of.

Frames made from plastic will be much cheaper than frames made from metal like titanium. And, is the frame aa designer frame or a non-branded frame? Some designer frames can cost an arm and a leg.

Lenses

With lenses, you’re paying for a specific prescription from an optometrist. You might have a drastic difference in prescription for each eye or an uncommon prescription.

This is why getting your glasses from an optometrist typically costs a lot more than the glasses you’ll find in a convenience store.

Using glasses solid in a convenience store isn’t a bad thing, though. It’s possible to find super cheap reading glasses that happen to have your prescription in there.

Seeing 20/20

Now you’re equipped with the foresight that you’ll need when you look into buying a pair of prescription reading glasses! Hopefully, you’ll be seeing 20/20 soon enough and hitting the books hard.

Have fun searching for your perfect pair and get excited about acquiring the best design for you with your newfound knowledge.
