How to Choose the Right Bed and Mattress for Your Kid

Sharing is caring!

Children grow up fast. Too fast, as far as some parents are concerned, as they burst through clothes and shoe sizes at what seems to be an alarming rate. As part of that growth, they quickly leave their baby room furniture and end up in need of a bed. Fortunately, beds can take longer to outgrow, especially if you start with a twin. Since the bed will be with them for a few years, you want to ensure it’s right for them and their growing bodies. While the general rules of mattress and bed buying still apply, you do need to take the children’s age into account.

As with most furniture that comes into use by kids a lot, you want the bed and it’s mattress to last. A durable mattress is a firm one, so make sure it’s nice and dense. A dense, firm mattress is one that won’t for a while. You might put up with some sag on your mattress, but young bones need support for proper growth, so make sure to get a strong, reliable mattress that will last. A firm mattress is also handy for preventing bouncing shenanigans. It’s not a matter of if your kid will hurt themselves jumping on the bed, but when. A firm, low bounce mattress will help mitigate that.

Since you want the mattress to last a while, you may want to consider a spring mattress. Foam mattresses don’t last as long and aren’t as durable. While not as big an issue with adults, kids can wear stuff out quickly, so a mattress that lasts longer is a good idea. Spring mattresses tend to be bouncier than foam, which is a concern, so test thoroughly before committing to a purchase.

To help improve mattress longevity, try and find one that is waterproof and can be easily cleaned. Mattresses collect all manner of grime and residue, so cleaning it helps keep the air clean and reduce allergens. If you can’t find a waterproof mattress in your price range, getting a waterproof cover sheet is a perfectly viable alternative.

Speaking of air, some mattresses have chemical additives to help with allergens and stain protection. Looking for certified mattresses devoid of polyurethane and similar compounds might take some research, but it will be worth it for your kid’s health and wellbeing. As with any long lasting purchased item, careful research is important. The demands for a children’s mattress can be extensive and sometimes counter to each other, but with some careful searches the right mattress can be found.

Of course, a good mattress needs a bed frame to support it, and that too needs research before committing to a purchase. As noted earlier, size is an important factor as well. Overstock.com, of all places, mentions that
