How to Document Your Pregnancy Journey: A New Mother’s Guide

Sharing is caring!

Forty weeks of pregnancy always sounds like a long time and certainly can feel like it at times, but most women will tell you that it was over in a blink of an eye. Documenting this special time is incredibly important, as it means you can reflect on that period with pride in your body and excitement for the next chapter. Many pregnant women will choose maternity photography to immortalise this time, but there are so many creative ways to document your pregnancy. Here are some ideas to get you inspired wherever you are in your pregnancy journey.

pregnancy journey

Maternity photography

Let’s start with the best idea first – photography! Photography is a perfect way to literally document the pregnancy, and you can choose to get it done at trimester 1, 2 or 3 – whatever you feel will be most comfortable. Many women will make this a solo photoshoot, but it can also be lovely to include your partner and even your little ones if this isn’t your first pregnancy. We would recommend getting a mixture of both!

Remember to ask the maternity photographer their thoughts on your wardrobe and the setting, as they will know what colours and materials are going to be the best balance for the photography. Photography in a studio can be stunning, but so can a shoot that is in a destination special to you.

Pregnancy journal

If only we could capture every thought, dream and trepidation during our pregnancy. With a journal, you can! When your baby comes, and you are in the thick of parenthood, you can open up the journal and be transported to that first kick, last scan, and all those other milestones along the way. Journaling has mental health benefits that can not be understated which are very important given the hormone-dense period that is pregnancy. If you don’t feel comfortable getting too raw with your journal, you can also include lists, name ideas and other little baby admin things you don’t want to forget.

Social media

Believe it or not, social media can be a positive influence on our lives! Many pregnant women will create a dedicated social media account that they can document their pregnancy with photos of themselves, their appointments, the baby loot they buy, the DIY nursery setup – and so much more. This is really special if you have family that do not live locally to you as they can follow along with your pregnancy and see all the little changes and watch how you prepare your family. You may wish to make this a public or private account – it is up to you!

Pregnancy calendar

A really visual way to document your pregnancy is with a calendar. You can put this on a wall in your kitchen or living area and note all the big milestones and appointments month by month. You can also make it even more exciting and mark in details that show what developmental stage your baby is in at certain months. You could write things like
