How To Protect Your Child From Mosquito Bites This Summer

Sharing is caring!

Mosquitos are annoying. It’s as simple as that. At best they provide irritation in the form of itchy bites that can be a nightmare to stop your child from itching. At worst they run the risk of passing on diseases that could require medical attention. However, they shouldn’t prevent you from letting your child enjoy their summer to the fullest, as long as you take sensible precautions. Here are some top tips to allow your child to enjoy a mosquito-free summer:

Splurge a little on insect repellent:

Everyone loves a good bargain, but there are some products where it’s worth splurging just that little bit more of cash. Insect repellent is one of these products, as many cheap products provide little or no protection against mosquito bites. Make sure to buy an insect repellent that contains DEET, as this is widely regarded to be the most effective ingredient in repelling insects. Lightly apply the repellent to all skin that may be exposed while outside, including the ears. Make sure to reapply as per the directions on the packaging.

Important note 1: DO NOT apply insect repellent to your child with a DEET concentration of more than 30%! This can be potentially harmful to your child’s skin.

Important note 2: DO NOT apply ANY DEET to your child if they are under 2 months old. Instead, use an alternative, baby-approved insect repellent that will not harm the skin.

Sunscreen/DEET combinations usually don’t work:

While they seem attractive to buy, these combination products usually have much less of an effect on screening your child from mosquitos. At best, they work for only a limited amount of time, forcing you to keep reapplying. Not only is this awkward, especially if your child is resistant to application, it also exposes your child to DEET more than necessary, making skin damage more likely.

Mosquito nets are definitely worth it:

They may seem a little awkward, but mosquito nets are one of the most sure-fire ways to protect your child from mosquitos. They can come in various forms. If your child is of the age in which they still use a stroller, cover it with a mosquito net. They will still be able to see out and will be protected from harmful insects. If you are in a scenario in which mosquitos are likely to appear en masse, such as during dusk, dawn, or near standing water, consider a net that goes over the face. It is usually the best way to prevent bites. Finally, consider a mosquito net that goes over the bed. Your child is most exposed to mosquito bites when they are sleeping. In short, there is nothing stopping you and your child from enjoying summer, but it is also important to be aware of the risks. If you take these relatively cheap and easy precautions, nothing can get in your way from enjoying unforgettable times with your child.
