How to Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer

Before you know it, October has rolled around again. Whilst many of you are thinking about Halloween and what you are going to dress up as others will be focusing on something that is at the other end of the spectrum. You see, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During this month, many charities and individuals dedicated to the cause will do their part to help raise as much awareness as possible.

The Card Network supports the NBCF, thus helping many women around the world to learn more about this heart-breaking disease. Even though we would like it to, breast cancer isn’t going anywhere soon and the more people who know about it, the fewer people who will lose their lives because of it. So, where can this awareness come from? We’re about to find out.

Create a Charity Fundraiser

Charity fundraisers are a great way to raise awareness, especially when it concerns something as serious as breast cancer, which affects millions of people worldwide daily. These fundraisers can be in support of a charity, or someone you know personally. And the great thing about them is that they can be fun. Regardless of whether you hold a family day with bouncy castles, where you have to pay an entry fee to get in, as well as having raffles where people can donate money, or if you decide to organize a fun run, they all have the same purpose. To get people to learn more about breast cancer and to spread the word.

Educate Yourself

If you know someone who has been diagnosed with or even survived this type of cancer, it is very likely that you already understand all the facts surrounding breast cancer. Taking the time to know the signs and symptoms so you have a higher chance of detecting them early, as well as what treatment paths you can consider, are great ways to enhance your learning in an area that would have otherwise been unknown to you. Not only are you helping yourself, but you are also encouraging others to go for their mammograms, as well as checking their breasts regularly to prevent the spread of cancer if you do get diagnosed.

Spend Money Wisely

Organizations like The Card Network, which support and work alongside The National Breast Cancer Foundation, offer their customers gift cards that can be used at a variety of different places such as spas and beauty clinics. When sold, a percentage of the sales from The Pamper Card go directly toward this foundation, instead of having to go through a middleman first. By doing this, you will know that your money is going to the right place. During Breast Cancer Awareness month, many retailers will show their support, but be sure to check where your money is going first before committing to their cause.

Wear Pink

Now, to those of you who already love wearing the colour pink, this won’t take too much convincing. But did you know that the pink ribbon is the international symbol for breast cancer? Simply wearing a pink ribbon on your t-shirt or deciding to wear a pink outfit for the day is all it takes to show your support for those who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, as well as the individuals who have battled and survived this disease. Doing this throughout October, as well as at certain times during the year will be a great way to increase and expand awareness for breast cancer.

Volunteer

There won’t be many of us who won’t know someone who has or has had cancer, in our lives. It affects more people around the world than you could ever imagine, and it doesn’t look like it will be slowing down anytime soon. This is why it could be important to show someone you care. Completing tasks like walking a dog, sitting with them during their appointments, or even preparing a meal is enough to brighten their day, and to make their lives easier. Are there organizations in your area that offer these types of services? The more help these services have when it comes to caring for people, the more awareness it will bring to the disease, as well as to the organizations who work tirelessly to support those affected.

Cancer is a horrible disease. But if everyone does their bit to help bring awareness to breast cancer, as well as supporting those who are in need, the world will be a better place to be. It could even be the difference between a good and bad day for those suffering from the disease. So, do your part! You could help to save a life.
