Pet Bird

Birds are no dummies! They are beautiful creatures that are fun to play with. They are intelligent, cheerful, and provide you with some time to get on with your life. But, do you know that birds, just like the other pets, have emotional complexities?

Though your pet birds don’t communicate their emotions directly like dogs or cats, their behavioral clues demonstrate several emotions. Thus, as a new pet bird owner, you need patience and careful observation to see those subtle clues of their feelings.

All this seems a bit daunting, right? Well, the good news is, there are several things you can do to take care of these wonderful companions.

Below are five tips to make sure that your pet bird stays content, healthy, and never has to deal with boredom or stress-

Spend Some Time With Your Pet Bird Everyday

As with any pet, attention is the most significant aspect of care. Though birds spend most of their time in the cages, they shouldn’t be left alone or isolated.

If you ignore their emotional or psychological well-being, it may trigger destructive behaviors, like feather picking. Some amount of socialization and bonding is necessary.

Here are two ideas to spend some time with your bird-

Bird Training

Birds are intelligent, so you can easily train them for obedience. It provides a great way to come closer to the bird, which makes pet bird care easier for you.

Playtime

Now that the training has made your bird calm, obedient, you can take them out of the cage for some playtime. However, make sure to close all the doors and windows or remove any harmful object from the room.

If your bird is smaller, and doesn’t leave the cage, buy some new toys to show that you care. But, before you buy a toy, make sure that it’s suitable for the species of the bird.

At Pets Supplies Unlimited, you can discover a wide range of bird toys. From fruit ring toy and bites to bird play stand, you can shop for all the birds’ essentials and keep them entertained.

Feed A Nutritious Diet

A fresh, balanced diet helps keep your bird healthy. Though pellets make a good base for birds’ food, you can also feed them with fresh fruits or vegetables.

Feeding fresh, varied food ensures that the bird is getting adequate nutrients. It also keeps the bird excited. Also, don’t forget to fill their water bowls!

Provide Them With An Entertaining Place To Live

It is unrealistic to be at home and play with your bird all day and night. However, you can outfit your bird’s cage with fun accessories and toys. For example, perches create pathways in the empty space and add to the cage’s real estate.

Or, you can also add other enrichments accessories, such as foot toys or dry treats. Further, you can provide some alone time to your bird by offering a perch cover, or hanging a toy near the bird’s roost to snuggle.

Give Your Pet Bird A Plenty Of Exercises

In the wild, birds fly, search for the food, and protect themselves from the predators. This provides them with all the exercise they need. However, in the cages, they don’t have such opportunities. So, as a bird owner, you need to make some efforts to do so.

You can provide some physically challenging toys, such as a ladder, ropes, etc. and let them play the way they want. Offer them plenty of time outside the cage, and teach them some bird tricks. It will keep them happy, mentally stimulated, and healthy.

Keep An Eye On Their Cleanliness

Keeping the bird’s cage clean is important for his/her health. So, take time to clean the cage at least once a week, and disinfect it thoroughly once a month.

Never keep the bird in a kitchen or bathroom, where temperature changes. Also, there keep them away from any fumes, sharp objects, machinery, or chemicals.  It’s best to keep them in an open area that is well-lit, room temperature, but away from direct sunlight.

These are some of the tips that may help first-time owners to keep their birds happy and healthy. Do you also have a special bird in your home? If yes, how do you keep him/her happy? Share with us!
