How to Wash Silk Pillowcases and Sheets: A Complete Guide

Sharing is caring!

Investing in a silk pillowcase for your beauty sleep is one of the best decisions you can make and one that your skin and hair will thank you for.

The most significant benefit you get from a silk pillowcase is glide. Sleeping on silk helps retain moisture in both your hair and skin. It means smoother skin, less-tangled hair, and all-over hydration for you.

When purchasing a Vegan silk pillowcase, the silk pillowcases made from mulberry silk are of good quality and bring significant benefits to your hair and skin.

Most of you must be wondering why mulberry silk?

Mulberry silk is the highest quality silk you can purchase. It is made from silkworms that are raised in captivity under exacting conditions. It is also the most expensive type of silk. Mulberry silk is made from the silkworms of the Bombyx mori mot. It contains a natural protein called sericin that reduces the possibility of an allergic reaction.

After a survey, we found out that people are usually confused when buying silk pillowcases or sheets whether silk pillowcases can be washed.

“Can silk be washed”? It’s an important thing that you should know.

In short, yes! You can wash pure silk pillowcases, and silk sheets are washable, and it’s easy to do. Plus, you don’t need special detergents, bleaching powder, and electronic gadgets. You can opt for machine or hand washing following the silk cleaning instructions below.

Here are some tips to keep your silk pillowcase and sheets clean, smooth, and shiny:

Hand as Well as Machine Wash is Fine

One of the easiest ways to clean silk pillowcases is hand washing or dry-cleaning due to its intricate texture. But, not everyone has enough time for this, so they opted for machine washing.

Generally, the quality or density of silk pillowcases depends upon Momme. Should the Momme be higher than 20, it’s safe enough to be inside the washing machine. If you know it’s less than 20, choose to hand wash instead.

Delicate Fabric Requires Delicate Treatment

Silk pillowcases and sheets have intricate textures. Due to its soft nature, it requires gentle cleaning. As it can damage quickly, it’s good to avoid washing your pillowcases/beddings at a high temperature. It is good to use a delicate cycle. If possible, then use a mesh laundry bag. It will protect it from snags from zippers, hook and loop fasteners, or rough spots in the machine. It is essential, especially if you have a mixed laundry load.

Use Mild Detergent

Silk is very delicate, so while washing your silk pillowcase or sheets, make sure to use delicate detergent. Harsh detergents ruin the coziness or smoothness of the silk and leave it feeling rough and scratchy. So, it’s good to use a gentle detergent, like a wool wash, that can clean well but protect the fibers. For hand washing, use about one teaspoon per sink basin.

Note* Use basic detergent with low pH and avoid alkaline, bleach

Air Drying is Recommended

Generally, we remove absorbed water from the clothes by twisting them, right? Don’t try this with a silk pillowcase. Doing so can damage the fabric plus turn to intense wrinkles. Simply take pillowcases, roll them in white towels to blot or lay white towels out on the bed, and blot sheets on top of them. Or you can hang dry your silk outdoors or inside. Moreover, your silk should dry in about 45 minutes, depending on temperature and conditions.

Important tip* Hang dry, or air drying silk doesn’t mean putting them directly under sunlight. Yes, because it can damage the silk fibers and may cause colors to fade, especially in darker colored silk.

Iron it Out

Ironing is the ideal way to finish delicate fabrics such as silk and silk-like synthetics.

The best idea is to turn the iron on the lowest setting and iron the silk sheets while still damp after a wash. It helps to keep away the wrinkles and helps dry the silk sheets faster.

Common Tips on How to Store Silk Pillowcases:

  • Air out your pillowcase.
  • Neatly fold and place it in a bag.
  • Toss in a couple of silica beads to absorb moisture.
  • Add a few cedar balls to repel bugs.
  • Close the bag, ensuring that it is air-tight.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.

If you are looking to buy a silk pillowcase in Canada or already using it, I hope the guide mentioned above will help you wash your pillowcase with extra care and protection.
