As children grow older, they are given more responsibilities at school, like completing more homework and engaging in leadership positions. As the pressures of school grow, many students are motivated to complete their work on time, while other students struggle to get started.

Therefore, parents need to take an active role early in children’s lives in regard to homework. Students need to learn how to manage their time and priorities their activities outside of school. However, there is a difference between motivating and forcing your child to study.

Encouraging your child to study is positive reinforcement, and it will build good habits that last. However, forcing your child to do their work will only lead to resentment and may even discourage them from studying.

So, what can you do when your child has no motivation to study? Here are some tips that may help you encourage your child to get their homework done.

  • Finding the root of the problem

Parents need to develop a plan to overcome the barriers that are preventing their child from completing his or her homework. For example, they may have a poor understanding of the material or the work is not suited to their learning style. Your child may also have low self-esteem and self-confidence.

To tackle this issue, you could talk to your child’s teacher to brainstorm ideas for suitable homework tasks to boost their confidence and understanding. You could also hire a reliable tutor who can help your child develop good study habits.

  • Make study time easier

Your child should have everything they need to get their work done. This may include a quiet and distraction-free space in your home. You can also give your child a light snack before a study session and plenty of water to ensure that they can focus on their homework.

It is essential to give them the tools that they need. So, you will need to check if they have pencils, a calculator, an eraser, and other essential tools that are easily accessible, so time is not wasted trying to find them. Having all they need in one place will mean less resistance and fewer excuses.

  • Create a solid study plan

Having a solid study plan will keep your child motivated and on track. You could sit down with your child and create a program that can help them complete their homework each night. The plan should include a due date for each assignment and how much time should be spent on each task, as well as prioritised activities based on due dates.

  • Create a reward system

Build a reward system for each successful task, so your child will have something to look forward to, and they will stay motivated when studying. You can also let them collect points after each study session, which they can redeem for something special.

  • Focus on learning instead of performance

It is much better to celebrate milestones rather than just focusing on grades and school performance. Your child may have finished writing their essay, or they solved a tricky math problem. For these milestones, you should complement them and reward them for accomplishing their work. This will surely boost their motivation and engage them to study more.
