The Good Dinosaur comes to theaters tomorrow – yay! I cannot wait for you and your family to go to the theater and enjoy it together. I was able to take my family to a prescreening last night (my third time seeing it!) and my husband and daughter enjoyed it just as much as I did. In anticipation of the movie, I’m excited to share some of the insight I learned from Director Peter Sohn and Producer Denise Ream.
It was interesting to hear that Peter Sohn actually wasn’t originally the director for The Good Dinosaur. Bob Peterson was the original director in 2009 and he pitched the movie to Peter to help develop it. While in development, Bob asked him to become co-director. And from there, Pixar asked him to become their director “because I had known all the paths that we have gone through.”
Another interesting thing to learn was that they used USGS topological survey maps to create many of the locations in the film. Also, The Good Dinosaur is the first time that they used 3D clouds (or volumetric clouds) throughout the entire film. They are usually map painted. It never ceases to amaze me the technology that goes into making these beautiful Disney/Pixar films!
According to Director Sohn, The Good Dinosaur was originally going to be a frontier story Peter grew up on Western movies and his favorite movie was Shane. That’s where he got the inspiration to go to the Grand Tetons in the Teton Valley. While there they got inspiration from the Snake River – which worked out great for the storyline in the movie.
One of my favorite characters in The Good Dinosaur is the Pet Collector – seen above, on the right. Pete Sohn happens to be the voice of this fun character! The funny thing is he didn’t even choose to be the voice – it just kind of happened because they didn’t have time to hold auditions to find someone to do the voice. Producer Ream actually begged Pete to do it because they just didn’t have the time. Fortunately Director Sohn had fun with it – and I know you’ll have fun watching him and hearing him.
It was so great meeting Director Pete Sohn and Producer Denise Ream and getting to hear more about the research and making of The Good Dinosaur. Make sure to head to theaters tomorrow, November 25th! You will not want to miss this great family movie! Stay tuned tomorrow for my review.
The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

I was sent on an all-expense paid trip to Los Angeles, California courtesy of Disney to experience The Good Dinosaur as well as other fun adventures I can’t wait to share with you all. All opinions, as always, are 100% my own.
I’m a 20-something stay-at-home mother and wife. I have an amazing husband, a beautiful daughter, two loving dogs, and a lazy cat. I wouldn’t change my life for anything! I love to read, listen to music, cook and blog!
