Long Weekends Are Perfect Mini Vacations for Families

Sharing is caring!

When you were a child, you probably looked forward to those long weekends, because it meant a day off–or two or three–from school. Long weekends are amazing if you love the outdoors as well, because they give you plenty of time to relax, hike, fish or take a swim. When you’re a parent, you learn to love long weekends, because they are perfect for your family to take a mini-vacation. If you are thinking about continuing a mini-vacation, here is information about planning and taking the perfect mini-vacation.

Plan Early

When it comes to taking a family mini-vacation, you’ll want to plan as early as possible. Before you were a parent, you were most likely able to quickly pack a bag and take off with your loved one. Now that you are a parent, it isn’t so easy. You not only have to think about yourself, you’ll need to think about your children as well. First, you need to do research on the internet to find a destination. You may want to start by looking for kid-friendly destinations, or kid-friendly attractions, such as zoos or aquariums.

Once you find an attraction to visit, you’ll want to look for lodgings. Many hotels cater to families, with family-friendly food, activities, and even games for kids to play. Family friendly hotels may even have childcare available if you and your partner want to get away for a quiet dinner together. Don’t forget to take a look at possible road trip stops, rest areas, food stops and possible emergency potty stops. The more you plan, the easier it will be for you when you actually take the road trip.

Pick a Kid-Perfect Destination

Now that you are really thinking about planning a mini-vacation, it is so important to pick a destination that is perfect for kids. For example, you may think the perfect mini-vacation is lying around on a beach with a fruity drink. However, your children are going to need more. They need a mini-vacation full of activities and fun.

Here are some things you can keep in mind while you’re looking for kid-friendly destinations. First, you will want to plan a mini-vacation that is not too far away. If you live in California, your mini-vacation destination doesn’t need to be in Maine. However, the Grand Canyon or Oregon are within reach. Second, look for a destination with both indoor and outdoor activities to do–you never know what the weather will bring. Third, look for a variety of activities, especially if you have children who have a large age range. That way, all of your children will have a good vacation.

Be Ready for Flexibility

For all of your planning, there may be a time you need to be flexible. This is especially true if you have younger kids. With younger kids, sticking to a schedule can be difficult. For example, you may have the perfect schedule planned to go and visit a children’s museum, but your toddler child may want to do anything but go inside. What a perfect time for parents to divide up the chores and the children. You may be able to wrangle the toddler, while your partner can take the older children. You may also need to change your schedule around due to illness, weather, or other factors. No matter how well you have planned, you’ll want to have the flexibility to alter your plans if needed.

Safety Is Key

When you are planning for fun, don’t forget to plan to be safety. There are a lot of problems you can avoid if you do a safety check. For example, are all of your children are the right car seats? You need to check and make sure that none of your children have outgrown their car seats and need a new one. Be sure that their seats are fastened in tightly and are facing the proper direction. For example, if your child is under the age of 2, or under 40 pounds, their car seat should be facing the rear of the car. If your child is a toddler, do they have car seat safety head support to keep their heads from moving around if they nap? Once you have checked their car seats, you can check out your car’s tires and fluids. Be sure you also have a safety kit in the car as well.

If you plan ahead of time, you and your family can have the mini-vacation of your dreams. Don’t forget to pack your patience and your flexibility as well. Once you’ve prepared, go out and make it a great mini-vacation.
