The Ancient Egyptians, who manufactured rush lights or torches by soaking the pithy core of reeds in melted animal fat, are generally credited with the invention of candles.
While the Egyptians used wicked candles around 3,000 B.C., the ancient Romans are generally credited with inventing the wicked candle by dipping rolled papyrus in melted tallow or beeswax repeatedly.
