Patterns to Match Your Floral Dress

Sharing is caring!

Most people associate the floral dress with the summer season, but it was not always the case. Clothes with floral patterns have originated in the East and imported to the West. In China, for instance, they have been wearing silk dresses with floral patterns as early as the 12th Century.

But no rule states that you cannot wear a floral dress in the winter season. Of course, people would wonder how you can expose your bare legs and calves without risking windburn. Nevertheless, with the right complementary clothing, you can pull it off and still turn heads. With that said, unless you are truly confident about it, you can wait for summer to pull your floral dress from your closet.

Here are some ways you can style your floral dress to make the most out of your investment:

  1. Floral + stripes — Most think that mixing floral and prints is a fashion no-no. However, it can create a stunning look if you can pull it off. A floral skirt will go well with a black and white striped blouse. The key here is balance. If you have loud-coloured patterns, make sure to choose very narrow stripes. For understated floral prints, you can choose thick and bold stripes. Not many people are aware that stripes are actually a neutral look and can go well with almost anything.
  1.  Polka dots —  Just like the stripes, polka dots match well with the floral wraparound skirt. You can follow the same rule with the stripes, which means contrasting pattern sizes. Before you go out of the house, however, make sure that you mix and match the different pieces to see how they go together.  Do not be afraid to experiment even with patterns that seem to clash with each other. You will never know if you are wrong or not unless by trial and error.
  1. Chevron — The chevron looks like a zigzag pattern or an inverted VA strung together to form a line. A retro-inspired floral dress will work perfectly with the chevron pattern.  A piece knit chevron blazer will complement a floral-patterned blouse.
  1. Plaid — Mixing your plaid and your floral dress will help create power and grace. It is the perfect outfit in an office setting where you want to display your fashion style and remain sophisticated. An oversized plaid suit will also work well during the winter season. But make sure that you establish your base colour so that you do not lose focus, especially since it is easy to go overboard with your look.
  1. Geometric patterns — These patterns can be bold or muted, but they can also work well with your floral dress. To mix it up, you can wear a geometric dress and pair it with a floral blazer. While you do not have to match your patterns, the key thing to remember is to limit the number of different designs to three pieces. It is not a hard rule, but a helpful tip, especially if you are a beginner.

You can buy a floral dress or two and achieve multiple looks depending on how you mix and match. You can be feminine, fashion-forward, sophisticated, or stay with the classic look. But never be afraid to experiment. As long as you are confident with your style, people will gravitate toward you. Nothing can fault your personal taste.
