As fall is upon us and winter comes nearer and nearer, it won’t be uncommon to see folks trying to squeeze in the last bits of “summer” they can. If you’re someone interested in enjoying the fall outdoors before winter finally comes, here’s a few fun things you can do.
Camping
The cool, fall weather allows for some of the best camping experiences. Not only is it that much easier to sleep at night, but the evening fires are so much more enjoyable. The perfect way to end the night is wrapped up in a blanket around the fire, enjoying conversation, and eating s’mores with your friends and family. Additionally, cooler weather is great for a hike through the woods. There are likely to be fewer mosquitoes and it’ll be easier to breathe.
The best part about camping is that you likely won’t need to travel far. Half of those camping will travel farther than 100 miles from home. While this is a lofty journey, it also implies that the other half will stay closer to home. As a result, this is a very accessible activity for families to partake in. Whether you’re bound to work responsibilities or the kids just don’t do well in cars, camping closer to home is a way to accommodate both those needs you get some time outdoors.
Time on the Water
Spending time on the water could be part of your camping trip experience or an experience all on its own. Luckily, 95% of all Americans live within an hour’s drive of a navigable body of water, making this another easily accessible activity for families to do together. Just don’t forget your swimsuit and sunscreen!
Whether you’re out on a boat, tossing a line from the docks, or swimming with your friends, time on the water is calming and refreshing. In 2017, there were approximately 11.6 million youth participants in fishing in the States. If you haven’t got a boat or the water is a bit too cold in September, fishing is a great way to enjoy the water but still stay dry and warm. Remember to have an updated fishing license, your poles, and some bait and you’ll be good to know. Even if you don’t catch a fish, the company and time spent on the water will be worth it.
Trail Walks
Along the same lines as hiking, a walk through your local trails is a perfect fall activity. The weather will be cool enough that you’re not sweating, but not too cold either since you’re moving. Like previously mentioned, the cool air will be refreshing to breathe. Not only that, but the sightseeing is also beautiful. A walk through the trails in late August through October will allow you to see the changing of the seasons up close. Walk your dog, meet up with a friend, or spend some quality time with a relative catching up while you enjoy the beautiful outdoors. It’s also good for your health!
If you’re not near any trails, you can still enjoy walking around outside. A very simple way to get some more outdoor activity before the snow finally falls is by walking through your neighborhood. Catch up with a neighbor or enjoy the time to think by yourself. Either way, don’t forget to look up and enjoy the view.
Spending time outdoors can be as simple as a walk around the block or as extravagant as a full-blown camping trip to the nearest national park. Whatever it may be, be sure to take a deep breath of the cool air and confide in the beauty of nature. You’ll need it to get through the future snow-trodden months.
